It occurs to me that Conifer sounds quite pretty for a girl. Nn Connie. Am I mad? I mean, Rowan is a name and that's a tree. And Jennifer sounds similar.

But Conifer isn't equal in unsuitability to Stinkweed Confused
Connie vs Stinky
You can't really compare

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 07/09/2018 21:04

I’d just use Connie. I’m not sure Conifer works as a name.

Although I suppose Hazel, Holly, Rowan are used. And I know a boy called Bay.

FWIW - I liked ‘Gethsemane’ as a name. But I didn’t actually inflict it on DD.

Haffdonga · 07/09/2018 21:04

Lots of words sound like they'd make good girls' names like Chlamydia and Areola but seriously, the actual problem with the name is that conifers are the hedges that neighbours have wars over and everybody hates.

If you like Connie which has a sensible long version already, there's absolutely no need to saddle the poor girl with a made up comedy name.

NonaGrey · 07/09/2018 21:20

Ok Polly but Conifer means “cone bearing” from conus and ferre. It’s not a really great meaning.

The Rowan means “to redden” (as in the berries) and Rowan trees have all sorts of great mythology surrounding them particularly for the Scots.

I know Pine trees have interest mythology too but a majestic Scots pine isn’t really what's brought to mind by Conifer (even if they are the same family).

lottiegarbanzo · 07/09/2018 21:32

Conifer - as in plantation?

They're not native to the UK, are grown mostly as a commercial crop, because they're so fast growing, and acidify the soil.

There are very few native British evergreens. Two of them offer better naming possibilities for a child:

Juniper
Yew
Scots Pine
Box
Holly

At a push, Connie could be short for Cornelia. Or how about Callie or Cassie?

NonaGrey · 07/09/2018 21:34

I suspect “Box” may be rather problematic as a potential name choice lottie...

Wink
lottiegarbanzo · 07/09/2018 21:37

Well maybe. Though I quite like Yew; 'Hey, Yew! Yes you, I mean you Yew!'

NonaGrey · 07/09/2018 21:46

Quite.

Yew is also possibly a little close to “Eeuww” so probably best avoided.

moredoll · 07/09/2018 22:06

yep, it's hormones. Conifer is not a human's name.

Constance is a lovely name, I think.

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2018 22:10

Conifer? Conifer?

It's your hormones, definitely.

Connie short for Constance is gorgeous.

strawberrypenguin · 07/09/2018 22:14

Connie is lovely. Conifer is not.

C0untDucku1a · 07/09/2018 22:16

I would name my next girl constance as i love that. Conifer? No.

MadMaryBoddington · 07/09/2018 22:17

I love it!

But then I wanted to call dd Anemone. MN talked me out of it

PassportBridgetPants · 09/09/2018 01:29

Damn. Thought I'd maybe come up with something genius there. Still not sure it's objectively bad though...? Maybe the world just isn't ready for it Grin

she'd get the p taken out of her at school...as an aside, I knew someone whose friend had a child called box

delphguelph · 09/09/2018 01:57

Conifer?

Is it even a word?

Just call the baby privet

NameChangedNow · 09/09/2018 01:57

I love it.

blinkineckmum · 09/09/2018 07:30

I liked Meg but my husband didn't like Megan so suggested Nutmeg.

bridgetreilly · 09/09/2018 07:42

OP, I definitely don't think it's the worst name suggestion I've ever heard on Mumsnet. I think it's a nice sounding name, as a sort of mashup between Constance and Jennifer. However, the wider connotations are less good. Yes, conifers are trees. They aren't always the prettiest trees and they also aren't specific kinds of trees. It's a bit generic. Like calling a child 'Bird' rather than 'Robin'.

MadMaryBoddington · 09/09/2018 11:28

The more I think about it the more I like it. Conifers are not all Leylandii hedges. Think about the beauty of the cedars of Lebanon, the giant redwoods of North America, the pine forests of Scandinavia, the Italian Cypress groves of Tuscany...

claptomania · 09/09/2018 11:32

Agree with whoever mentioned Juniper above. Lovely name. And actually a name for a person.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/09/2018 11:53

Yeees, MadMary but in the UK they are overwhelmingly 'forestry plantation'.

lottiegarbanzo · 09/09/2018 11:54

Oh yes and, I just have to throw in, that Box was of course Pandora's nickname in the Adrian Mole books!

pumpkinyael · 09/09/2018 12:42

Still not sure it's objectively bad though...?
It's not objectively horrible, I agree. It's not my cup of tea but there is certainly worse.

Cornel nn Connie (like the cherries) might work?

lottiegarbanzo · 09/09/2018 12:54

Coral / Coralie nn Corrie?
