if we like Samuel...

DP and I are expecting our first baby; we don't know the sex yet and have a few girl ideas lined up. Unfortunately we have quite different taste in names, and the only boy's name we both agree we like is Samuel/Sam.

If we're having a Sam we're having a Sam, that's fine - I'd just like to have a few more options on the table, so any ideas would be welcome. Names I love, that DP has vetoed:

  • Jude (all-time favourite)
  • Daniel
  • Leo
  • Frankie/Francis
  • Solomon

DP hasn't stated many active preferences besides a vociferous dislike of the names I suggest. He likes Bert. He's a movie buff (studied film in fact) and was quite keen on finding a name with a link to classic films (the girls' names he suggested are Ilsa like Ingrid Bergman's character in Casablanca, and Piper as in Laurie). He particularly likes Paul Newman, Buster Keaton, Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart.

Movie buff names that print to mind;
Luke (cool hand Luke)
George (It's a wonderful life)
Harry (Harry and son)
Miles (empire falls)
Scott (Scottie from Vertigo)
Gideon (Gideon trumpet)
Alfred after Alfred Hitchcock
Or Henry after Henry Fonda?

Our DS was either going to be Joshua or Samuel.

Jent13c · 06/09/2018 21:03

We have a Seth, similar to above but a wee bit less used

NotTired · 06/09/2018 21:05

Samuel was on my list. Other names on my list were Albert, Benjamin, Arthur, Joseph, Elias, Henry and Edward.

Call him Sam short for Samuel. It's cute, people instantly warm to the name, it doesn't date and it's a classic name. It ties in with the current trend for biblical names without being faddy.

Of your vetoed names:

  • Jude (all-time favourite) - really don't like it
  • Daniel - great
  • Leo - yes but too popular
  • Frankie/Francis - ok
  • Solomon - yes, but too long. Could be Sol for short.

Suggested alternative: Max

Theo

I have a Samuel and also liked All the names you've mentioned although my dad is Franklyn so it was Franklyn/Frankierather than Francis.
I also started liking Vincent/Vinnie and Rory (not sure if I was hormonal)

I have a Samuel. To be honest I never thought of any other names, as it was the only one I wanted.

deptfordgirl · 07/09/2018 08:27

I know a few little Samuels and their siblings are called Caleb, Toby and Michael.

mummyhaschangedhername · 07/09/2018 08:56

I've got a Sam.

We stuck with traditional names, in fact most of the family have, so between us we have,

Matthew
Daniel
Noah
Isaac
Jacob
Matthew
Thomas

Girls we have are
Lucy and Rachel

Our Samuel is always Sam, there is another Samuel in his class, it's a fairly common name but it really suits him.

Thanks all! I do like Elias and Josiah but I doubt DP will. @DuchessAnnagovia maybe I'm overthinking and it's fine just to know what you want to call the baby. I'm slightly nervous I'll suddenly go off it at 40 weeks and have no fallbacks.

I think people will be surprised I chose such a traditional name. My own was really unusual growing up (although it's very trendy now), but tbh I feel more and more lately that the kid's name should not be a statement about me: he just needs to be able to get through life with it.
