Does anyone like the name Teddy for a girl?

If you do like it for a girl, how would you spell it?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
faeriequeen · 05/09/2018 22:57

Teddi is dreadful. As a shortened version of Edward, Edwin, Edgar, Theodore etc it's lovely.

Wolfiefan · 05/09/2018 23:11

Mike it's not about whether a name makes you like a person. It's about saddling a child with a stupid yooneeq spelling or name that they have to spend their whole life spelling out and correcting pronunciation. So unfair.

pickleface · 05/09/2018 23:14

Bloody love it!

RoseMartha · 05/09/2018 23:16

No.
Its ok as a nickname for a boy.

BackforGood · 05/09/2018 23:23

OK for a small stuffed toy.
Not for a person.
Obviously nicknames sometimes evolve within the family, but don't make this anyone's real name.

autumnkate · 05/09/2018 23:26

My daughter’s name is Theodora and she is called Teddy or Ted by everyone. Some people have made snarky comments and other people have told me they love it.

Short for Theodora I think it’s great. To me it sounds very feminine I think because of the ee noise at the end.

Not everyone will like it and that’s fine.

Twelve8Ts · 05/09/2018 23:35

Love it!

pumpkinspicetime · 06/09/2018 00:18

I have a Theodore, I started by calling him Teddy for the first few years. Since he went to school he has been called Ted, short, practical and not much for any kids to object to. He gets Theodore if he is really out of line. I like Thea as well as Teddy.

Sunflower321 · 06/09/2018 08:47

Of course people grow into their names, but the word teddy brings to mind a teddy bear. And that's quite a strong association for most people, so the first thing they think of when hearing Teddy is a cute cuddly teddy bear!

So it's cute for a baby or small child, but I'd give your child a full name like Theodora, which is beautiful.

CherryChatsworth · 06/09/2018 10:55

He's never once been called teddy bear - apart from by me Grin I can see why people might think it's an obvious thing to call a child named teddy but it just hasn't happened in 12 years

Sunflower321 · 06/09/2018 11:05

I think most people in real life are polite enough not do that.

The op has asked for honest opinions, that's different.

CherryChatsworth · 06/09/2018 12:33

Nothing to do with being polite. It just doesn't occur to people. Only weirdos on Mumsnet

pumpkinspicetime · 06/09/2018 13:20

I have to say that DS is called Bear quite a lot, mostly by his friends but he is in US and I think it is a more common name here.

MumUnderTheMoon · 06/09/2018 14:27

I love teddy for a girl it is short for theadora which is lovely too.

SingleCellParamecium · 07/09/2018 22:51

Teddy Sheringham, Teddy Roosevelt, Ted Kennedy...grown men who don’t/didn’t get laughed at for their names. I think Ted/Teddy has been much more popular in America in previous few decades, so used to hearing it here as an adult’s name. Not so much here in UK until much more recently, but there are now LOADS of young Teds and Teddys who are going to grow up and make it into a much more common adults’ name in the next couple of decades!

Giantsquid · 07/09/2018 22:54

Simpering. Wet. Common.

MadMaryBoddington · 08/09/2018 05:05

I would hate to be called Teddy.

mommabear7 · 08/09/2018 06:18

I think it's cute.

My grandad was 'ted' as a stand alone name and got 'teddy' all his life.

mommabear7 · 08/09/2018 06:21

But I wouldn't use it for a girl. I forgot that part Grin

Sessy19 · 08/09/2018 06:31

I think Teddy is much more suitable for a girl than a boy.

Teddy is just far too cutsie to be suitable for any little lad!! It’s clearly a popular name, so I’m probably the only person on mumsnet who thinks that, but different strokes and all that...

But it’s not quite a full name. Theodora (although why would you change or nn this beautiful name 😍), Edwina, Theresa....you could probably get away with using it to nn any name with the ‘EH’ vowel-sound...

Sunflower321 · 08/09/2018 07:53

A teddy is such a well known soft cute cuddly toy!

Cute nickname for a little girl, but the suggestions of Theresa or Theodora are much nicer! Although I'd probably shorten to Thea.

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 16:22

I love boys names for girls in most cases, but think Teddy is
Probably one i wouldnt be swayed towards. My grandson is
Named teddy but will be called ted as he grows older. (He was
Named after his grandad so it had a special meaning).

Have u any other names on your list?

RavenWings · 08/09/2018 16:42

I think it's a cute nickname, but a dreadful given name. It's infantile and cutesy.

Sunflower321 · 08/09/2018 17:04

Cute for a toddler maybe!

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 08/09/2018 17:14

Only if they're actually Theodora, but known as Teddy
