What do you think for a little girl?

Is it nicknameable?

Lovely!

Names don't need pre-planned nicknames, you know Wink.

Onedayy · 03/09/2018 08:11

Never heard of it and not keen sorry

weebarra · 03/09/2018 08:12

Love it. Not if you're from Paisley though as St Mirren are the local football team.

TeddyIsaHe · 03/09/2018 08:15

Not that keen, it's a Japanese condiment spelt slightly differently.

Susannach · 03/09/2018 08:19

I like it but it does make me think “Dame Helen”. I prefer Merryn for that reason.

Miri or Minnie, maybe?

PenelopeThePufferfish · 03/09/2018 09:23

I love Merryn, but hadn’t heard of Mirren other than as a surname... not sure if I like it so much.

loveshinealight · 03/09/2018 09:39

I much prefer Morven.

Quangot · 03/09/2018 10:06

I'm not keen on surnames as first names. I like the suggestion of Merryn though.

InezGraves · 03/09/2018 10:11

Mirren isn't necessarily.a surname as a first name, though -- I'm assuming it's a Scots Gaelic version of the Irish 'Muireann' (pronounced MWIRR-en or MIRR-en depending on region.)

I love it.

theunsure · 03/09/2018 10:13

Not keen - makes me think of Midden!

But I love Merryn

keepingbees · 03/09/2018 10:17

I quite like it. Probably end up nicknamed as Mirry or similar

elQuintoConyo · 03/09/2018 10:31

As in Helen? She us bloody fabulous, so for that reason alone i'd say go for it.

As it's a 2-syllable nane, personally i wouldn't be thinking up 2-syllable nicknames for her already. My name has 2 syllables, as does DS', DH's has 3 and none of us have or use nicknames, not at school or among family. Apart from Chicken. I call everyone Chicken Grin

Sungura · 03/09/2018 10:43

Call her Myrrh, Meir, or Wren.

Sophronia · 03/09/2018 10:54

Lovely name.

meala · 03/09/2018 11:20

Lovely. I know two Mirrens both with different spellings. Always called by their full names, never nicknamed. St Miren is the patron Saint of Paisley.

Pemba · 03/09/2018 12:22

Being English, I would previously only have thought of Helen Mirren and trotted out my usual anti-surnames for first names thing.

But I learnt on here a while ago that Mirren is actually a Scottish given name. You can learn a lot on Mumsnet! It does have a nice sound, and would make a good first name, I would go for it. I don't know if you need a nickname, as it's short already, but you could use Miri? People might assume she's Miriam though.

sexnotgender · 03/09/2018 12:24

Not sure about the spelling but love the name.

Was that not the name of Mel Gibson’s wife in braveheart?

IVflytrap · 03/09/2018 12:56

I really like it. Mirri is a sweet nickname.

ReginaPhalange89 · 03/09/2018 13:49

I really like it. I know a couple of Mirrens born in the last couple of years, spelled in different ways

I'm in Scotland, think it's normal for Scottish folk but maybe the rest of the UK don't think if it as a first name. Don't think that matters (especially if you live in Scotland).

villainousbroodmare · 03/09/2018 13:50

Lovely.

GraceMarks · 03/09/2018 15:25

Not Merryn. Anyone who follows Game of Thrones will know why!

I've never heard of Mirren as a first name but the more I think about it the nicer it sounds. I don't think it needs a nn personally.

Yakcracklewhat · 04/09/2018 10:10

I just like the idea of a cute shortening to a name!

A nickname can be unrelated to the name though I know, and emerge by itself.

My cat is called this. Tbf it was on my girl’s names list ( with traditional spelling Muireann) but I didn’t get to use it. The cat got named it instead but with the Anglicised version as it’s hard enough explaining my DC’s Gaelic names without going through that at the vet too.

SoftSheen · 04/09/2018 10:24

Merryn is nicer.

YolandaTheYeti · 04/09/2018 10:30

I imagine it being shortened to Mirri or Ren maybe.

I think it’s a good idea to consider all possible shortenings before choosing a name. My dd keeps calling baby ds a shortened version of his name, which I hate! Never thought of it till she started saying it. Now I’m doing what I said I never would and using my preferred nn on a baby. When he’s old enough, he can choose of course (but I guarantee he WON’T choose the one dd is using).
