Predictions for 2017's top names

Lallypopstick · 01/09/2018 20:19

The ONS usually publishes data on the top baby names of the last year around this time (last year the data was published 20th September and the year before it was 2nd September).

Any predictions about what might top the chart or be the new climbers? I think Theo might break the top 20 (29th last year) and Arlo won't be far behind (49 last year). And maybe an increase in Meghans because of Meghan Markle (apparently only 881st last year). I was also wondering about Ariana after the Manchester bombings and One Love concert.

Any others?

Olivia, Ava and Sophie will be in the top five, if not top three.
Jack, Sam and Oliver also.

Rising names -
Maeve, Mabel, Ivy.
John, Alan, Robert.

Followed by the inevetable DM readers "Mohamed top name again what is with Britain??" fucking about online.

2totwo · 01/09/2018 20:43

It's been confirmed for release on 21st September (not that I'm counting or anything Blush). I'm predicting a surge in Aria but probably little change to the top 10, maybe Poppy will edge into it.

Lallypopstick · 01/09/2018 20:50

Bit of a wildcard with Alan there NapQueen - based on anything in particular?

Haha I have a vested interest 2totwo as my baby was born last year so I'm keen to see where he is on the list.

I’ve seen the names Harper, Amelie and Bertie more than a few years ago.

lifechangesforever · 01/09/2018 21:12

Evelyn must have jumped up a fair bit, I know at least 5 couples who have named their daughter this in the last year - maybe one for next year.

Interested to see where Thea is - hopefully even further down (named DD this 6 weeks ago).

If she was a boy, she was going to be Theodore, which I'm totally put off by the popularity of now so agree with PP that it will have moved up.

SemperIdem · 01/09/2018 21:15

Lottie will be well up there, I’ve heard of 5 recently. None of them are Charlotte nn Lottie.

SemperIdem · 01/09/2018 21:15

Felix too, quite a few of those.

Rising boys; Ezra Elijah, Luca, Xander, William, Finn, Archie

Rising girls; Ivy, Emmeline, Ayla, Elsie, Luna

VeraSwampDuck · 01/09/2018 23:14

I think Grace and Sophia/Sofia will make even further gains.
And Violet will be a big riser.

Sew3stitch · 01/09/2018 23:19

Boys names ending in o - arlo, milo, Theo etc. Have met a lot of these at baby groups.

Seems to be a bit more variety for girls but Emily still seems popular here in the NE and I’ve met a couple of Ada/Ayda type names.

Sew3stitch · 01/09/2018 23:21

P.s. have always found baby names / trends fascinating so I am REALLY looking forward to the release!

SemperIdem · 01/09/2018 23:23

Agree with Elijah, this decades Noah.

charitypringle · 01/09/2018 23:43

I think Amelia will still be very strong and Emilia. I know quite a few named this last year.

Edith, Ezra, Jonah on the rise.

Elijah to break top 10? Seems to be a lot of Eli’s around.

I reckon River has climbed a lot too for boys.

Patienceisvirtuous · 01/09/2018 23:51

I have a Theo, born early last year. When we chose his name I only knew of a couple, tenuously. Then suddenly it became prolific, I don’t know what happened?! 😩

I love it though.

SemperIdem · 02/09/2018 00:21

That’s interesting Patiens, Theo has been on my list of ‘nice but too popular/not giving the vibe I want names’ since I was pregnant, my daughter is now 3. Wildly popular in my area, has been for almost a decade.

I find it fascinating how names can have significant regional popularity that doesn’t play into being high up the name stats and then all of a sudden, they do.

SemperIdem · 02/09/2018 00:23

Posted too soon - I do think Theo is a lovely name, I was just (at the time) being a bit of a “I want an unusual name” berk.

Lallypopstick · 02/09/2018 05:23

Regional trends are so interesting too. There must be little clusters where uncommon names are more common, as you might hear of a name from a friend of a friend and then use it yourself, and so on.

Kwan42 · 02/09/2018 05:35

I loved the name Harvey before the whole Harvey Weinstein incident...
for a girl I like Katerina as it has a sophisticated vibe to it

IggyAce · 02/09/2018 05:49

Amelia, Olivia, Jack and Oliver will still be in the top 5. Rising names will be Theo, Thea and Evelyn.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Barbara, Rebecca, and Paul rising too.

crisscrosscranky · 02/09/2018 06:32

I'm predicting Harriet, Rosie, Aria and Emily to be up.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/09/2018 07:12

Florence to be in the top 20. Aria and Harper to rise.

Teddy to rise-probably Theodore and Theo too. Ezra and Arlo will have risen too. And Jasper.

Lallypopstick · 02/09/2018 08:06

Interesting about Harvey Kwan42 wonder if there are any other names that have fallen from grace? Isis is the most obvious one.

raviolidreaming · 02/09/2018 08:06

Aria and Isla to rise. I think Amelia might be starting to fall now

Theo and Freddie going up, and Oliver at the top for boys.
