What do you think of the name Basil?

Tia :)

It’s pronounced differently in the US, if that matters to you at all. And I also would associate it with Basil Fawlty.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/08/2018 22:29

Vasily in Russian.

Not sure it works well in German.

NoCureForLove · 30/08/2018 22:29

Lovely. I know an adult Basil and he's cool.

DramaAlpaca · 30/08/2018 22:30

Brush, then Fawlty.

It's a no from me.

MeyMary · 30/08/2018 22:33

Not sure it works well in German.

I know to German Basils (actually went to school with one...) and I feel like it works rather well in German.

Vasily we're not Russian...

@Kescilly
Like the herb? (The US American pronunciation?)

It’s on my list for a dog.

I like Aloysius for a cat.

MeyMary · 30/08/2018 22:38

Nicknames seem to be Bassy/ Bazzy, Baz and Bizzle, Bizzy. But that might just be when it's a cat

Ah, these sound fine. I feel like these might work rather well if we ever move back to the UK/for DH's British family?

But the strong Mumsnet response may make me reconsider. Might not work for the UK (and we said we'd pick a name that really does work in English as well...)

Maybe it's not as perfect as I thought it might be... Sigh.

Anyhow, thanks!

My 1 year old is called Basil! He's very energetic with a wonderful cheeky personality. He's got 4 legs and is a furry poodle . It's a fab name. - nicknames are Bazman/ Bazzle Frazzle / the Basilator

AfterSchoolWorry · 30/08/2018 22:41

Awesome!

LightDrizzle · 30/08/2018 22:42

It really suited my parrot but I wouldn’t inflict it on a child. “Oh! So you’re two doctors!...” etc. etc.

BackforGood · 30/08/2018 22:42

It is a fox according to DH. He apparently didn't feel like it was a particularly negative or prominent association

He was / is lovely Grin
Basil Brush is a puppet (yes, of a fox) but he has been the presenter of his own children's show for decades. He is well loved and certainly not a bad association, just very much "owns" the name, so many people would instantly visualise Basil Brush when they hear the name.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 30/08/2018 22:43

If that's one of the better suggestions...what are some of the worst??

EmmalinaC · 30/08/2018 22:44

My elderly dog is called Basil. It works.

Really struggling to imagine a small boy with the same moniker.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 30/08/2018 22:45

Oh and in Scotland we'd call balls 'ba's' as in 'you kicked me in the ba's' so don't move to Scotland Grin

Enko · 30/08/2018 22:46

I LOVE it badly wanted it for DS but dh was on a complete no.

Kescilly · 31/08/2018 00:08

@MeyMary yes basil the herb is pronounced differently in the US and the UK. Not that it necessarily matters, but thought you might want to know. In the UK it has a short "a" sound like in "hat" and in the US it is a long "a" sound as in "day."

I see you are not in the UK so it probably matters even less!

moredoll · 31/08/2018 02:38

Basil Fawlty.
No way.

Monday55 · 31/08/2018 03:19

I have a relative with that name and I'm not a big fan of it.

LoL'd at basil brush though, had totally forgotten about him.

Mum2OneTeen · 31/08/2018 03:31

Nooo!

Imknackeredzzz · 31/08/2018 03:33

It’s a cats name!

NameChangedNow · 31/08/2018 03:35

I love it

MeyMary · 31/08/2018 08:48

I just don’t know what else to do.

A cat? Confused

I see you are not in the UK so it probably matters even less!

DH wants a name that works well in English / the UK and I agreed... I prefer the "British" pronunciation (which happens to be the one DH uses) but don't mind the American one either...
