What are your thoughts on the name Adda?

Hi all, I'm expecting a baby girl in September and can't decide on a name. I would like something that will be connected to Poland as I am Polish. There is a Polish name Ada but pronounced completely different from English Ada. Very similar in pronunciation to Adda. Have you heard this name before? Is it nice or not really? What are your opinions please?

Adder (same pronunciation) is a type of snake. I don’t think it sounds nice in English. Sorry!

Lightlover2018 · 30/08/2018 15:47

It makes me think of the British snake, the Adder. I don't think it's nice in English, sorry.

DPotter · 30/08/2018 15:47

No sorry - sounds like the snake - adder.
Now Ada is fine. Could you use the english spelling, pronounce the name Adda at home and Ada at school etc.

Notthisnotthat · 30/08/2018 15:49

I misread it as Asda.

I met an Adda recently, and she was lovely! But, it's not a great one for use in England because of the snake connection. What else is on your list?

Kewqueue · 30/08/2018 15:51

I love the name Ada. Why don't you use that? You can use the Polish pronunciation if you prefer. My dd has a name that is written the same but pronounced differently in 2 languages and it's never been a problem.

SlowlyShrinking · 30/08/2018 15:52

I also thought of the snake, sorry. If it wasn’t for that I’d like the name.

Itchytights · 30/08/2018 15:53

Nope. I am terrified of snakes and I thought of them straight away!

Definitely not

keepingbees · 30/08/2018 15:55

I read it as Asda too. Also makes me think of a snake

itallhappensforareason · 30/08/2018 15:56

I also misread it as Asda!

grasspigeons · 30/08/2018 15:57

In English it does sound like a snake, but it has a nice sound to it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/08/2018 16:02

A snake or a baby trying to say Asda

awuszka · 30/08/2018 16:15

Omg I had no idea about this snake lol
Thank you all for your messages!
I really like the name Ada and the polish pronunciation but not keen at all on the English one. Other names that we are considering are Ela (like English Ella), Maya and Sara.

Well probably it would be fine in Poland, but as you are living here, and your pronunciation would be unusual here, people will think of the snake (adder) unfortunately.

Sara, Maya and Ela are all lovely. I had a Polish friend once named Ela but for living in the UK she changed the spelling to Ella. But I don't think that's really necessary. Her Ela/Ella was short for Elzbieta though. (Did I spell that right? - Polish version of Elizabeth). There are lots of lovely Polish names but I don't think the Polish Ada will work unfortunately.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/08/2018 16:32

Sara is gorgeous.

Crystalblue13 · 30/08/2018 16:33

Ella and Maya are lovely 😊

foreverblessedbee · 30/08/2018 16:38

The niece is English and her husband Polish -their child is Eva. I know they sometimes pronounce it Ev-Ah (the polish way) at home but the rest of her English family always call her Eva (Eee-vah) That's a lovely name that seems to work across both nationalities. I don't like Adda at all op, sorry.

foreverblessedbee · 30/08/2018 16:39

*dh's niece not "The" nieceBlush

MerryDeath · 30/08/2018 16:46

Read Asda at first glance. In any case I'm not a fan. Or is it meant to be Ada/Ayda? Slightly better.. potential to be the new Isla if you like popular names.

Kripton · 30/08/2018 16:53

I know a lovely Polish girl called Ania

JellySlice · 30/08/2018 16:57

I've only known Ada pronounced Ah-da (the ah sounds like the a in father). Is that the Polish pronounciation?

I thought Ay-da was the American pronunciation!

cheshireagain · 30/08/2018 17:06

Actually thought this said Asda at first glance!

I got excited! (I'm a brand consultant and so was looking for a good brand semantics debate).

Pemba · 30/08/2018 17:07

Well if it's ah-da (long 'a') that would be alright of course. You will still get people trying to say 'ay-da' though, but just correct them.

It's short 'a' adda like the snake adder that would be a problem.

awuszka · 30/08/2018 17:21

Yes, Polish Ada is pronounced like Ah-da.
I would like a name that is not that popular nowadays and I think Ela and Maya are quite common now... What do you think? Sara is nice but not unusual. Thank you for your replies!
