Hi! My husband is American and he recently brought up a name for our son due in September I actually quite like: Zero, as in the actor Zero Mostel. I've researched the name and it has a significant amount of meaning and history, it means so much more than just the number. We love it and think it's a strong name with an interesting history, but not everyone will feel that way---any thoughts? Thank you so much.

Nul points! Grin

TeaAddict235 · 27/08/2018 20:32

@PasstheStarmix i Know. Recently it seems that one or two posters have been suggesting Jane or Emma regardless of the suggestions. Just thought that i'd get in there first. A MN joke Grin but I suppose that Jane or Emma might equally be fitting as Zero was considered anyway non?

Rebecca36 · 27/08/2018 20:33

Why not call your baby a nice ordinary name that will not embarrass him later?

Or you could call him Xerox I suppose.

Rebecca36 · 27/08/2018 20:34

Just to add, many people will associate the name with 'Ground Zero'. Not good.

AndInShortIWasAfraid · 27/08/2018 20:36

With all your research you didn't discover why the actor was called Zero? I'm sure it's on his Wiki page. The 'meaning' behind the name is awful, please don't do it.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 27/08/2018 20:38

Poor kid doesn’t stand a chance

Gigis · 27/08/2018 20:39

I just think of the character in 'holes'. He was given the nickname zero by a bullying camp guide because "there was nothing going on in his empty little head". I associate it with this character sorry.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/08/2018 20:42

Have you ever watched Seinfeld? George Costanza wanted to call his kid 7.....using numbers as names was being mocked over 20 years ago. Why put your child through that?

MalloryLaurel · 27/08/2018 20:50

What a mean mother calling him Zero as he'd amount to nothing! I guess he amounted to something despite her mean nickname.
What about Zane? I think it'd be unkind and lead to bullying calling your son that name.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 27/08/2018 20:52

Isn't the Beckham daughters middle name seven?

PasstheStarmix · 27/08/2018 21:01

TeaAddict235 Grin Oh I see, very appropriate

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/08/2018 21:08

@asaprofessional it is! I remember wondering at the time if they were Seinfeld fans

Strokethefurrywall · 27/08/2018 23:16

We have a zero here but spelt Xero. Lovely kid, quirky name but I met the baby before I learnt the name so didn't think it was odd.

Names sound so much better on actual babies rather than the idea of a baby.

Joeybee · 28/08/2018 01:39

I think you'll get a lot of negativity and critical comments about this name. It is just very unusual and 'out there'. Possibly you'd get away with it in the US but I think it'd be a bit much more a lot of British people.

Saying that it is clearly a name you both like and has meaning for you. I say go for it. You'll just have to be prepared for comments and a lot of 'oh that's unusual' and things like that. If you're happy you can live with that then go for it.

woodfires · 28/08/2018 01:43

Apart from the fact they aren't naming a dog but a dc that will have to survive playground teasing, put his name on job and university application forms and introduce himself to new people all the time growing up and as an adult. So naming him something you like but you know others are going to find really odd at best is pretty selfish behavior.

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 28/08/2018 08:31

Oh OP, please don't. Not to be mean but it is really not nice at all. Maybe as a middle name?

GraceMarks · 28/08/2018 16:44

joeybee except it won't just be the OP who has to live with it, it'll be poor old Zero. Imagine if he grows up to be overweight, it'll be a gift to the bullies - here comes Big Fat Zero! They might as well call him Please Kick My Arse and have done with it.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/08/2018 16:52

Zero points from me, sorry

Dollymixture22 · 29/08/2018 00:07

Please don’t
