Hello! My husband and I are considering "Walter" for our son, nickname would be Walt. Husband's American and loves Walter Cronkite/Walter Matthau, but we are residing in London, and I worry about how our son would be treated with such a clunky name! Any thought?! Thank you!

It's unusual but endearing. I think some people might shorten it to Wally.

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2018 07:19

Anything goes in London!

RoseMartha · 27/08/2018 07:28

Not a fan personally. Better shortened to Walt although people might say 'like in Disney' a lot. If you like it use it.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 27/08/2018 07:30

I love it and wanted to use it. But husband really hated it so we didn't use it in the end :(

ismellsnow · 27/08/2018 07:30

Count yourself lucky you're not in Scotland, Walter is sometimes shortened to Watty here!

Hassled · 27/08/2018 07:32

I like Walt lots. And Walter isn't clunky - it's old-fashioned but it's a name everyone would recognise as a name, IYSWIM. If you like it, go for it.

AtticaRose · 27/08/2018 07:51

I know a Walter (age 8). I think it's quite nice actually.

Immigrantsong · 27/08/2018 07:53

Don't like it at all.

Quangot · 27/08/2018 07:55

It's great, very retro cool.

crunchtime · 27/08/2018 08:00

It's awful and immediately makes me think of Walter the softy

TheMythicalChicken · 27/08/2018 08:02

I think it's very cool!

Flamingosnbears · 27/08/2018 08:10

Walter is gorgeous try not to be swayed by negative posts... If you love it go for it, you could shorten to Walt it doesn't have to be Wally Wink

Happyasharrie · 27/08/2018 08:17

I love both Walter and Walt, go for it if you both like it!

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 27/08/2018 08:28

It would definitely make me think of Walter the Softy. On that basis I’m not a fan.

What do you think?
sonlypuppyfat · 27/08/2018 08:31

I read the Beano every week so definitely Walter the softy

Seafoodeatit · 27/08/2018 08:39

I'm not a fan of it either. It makes me think of the Beano character who in turn makes me think of rees-mog.

Sophronia · 27/08/2018 09:15

I like it

fizzytonicplease · 27/08/2018 09:15

I loved this name, unfortunately in my southern (lazy) accent it sounds exactly the same as if im saying water, like wa-(drop the T)- er.
Whenever i would try to say it properly it was lole i was trying to then over pronounce the L if that makes sense.
Its a lovley name so go with it if all your friends dont have strong london accents, or it wont sound as lovely.

Cheeseplantandpickle · 27/08/2018 09:19

I quite like it.

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 27/08/2018 09:20

I really like it. I wanted to consider it but DP isn’t a fan. I think Walt is a lovely name!

SpectacularAardvark · 27/08/2018 11:01

Not my taste really but I know a couple of little Walters, must be making a bit of a comeback.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/08/2018 13:29

Walter White Breaking Bad.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/08/2018 13:38

I like it too.

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 27/08/2018 13:54

I love it and would have considered it but with OH surname it sounds very much like the name for he character in breaking bad 😬

foxtiger · 27/08/2018 17:28

Not my thing - it seems old-fashioned in a not-so-good way to me. Also does anyone else remember Walter Wurx?
