Girl name help

Hi, having a baby girl and need help with names, so difficult! We tend to like traditional longer names that have a shorter nickname. So far we've whittled it down to;

Harriet - Hattie/Hettie
Philippa - Pippa (I'm aware of the meaning in other counties, doesn't bother us she can use full name if needed)

We like both like the longer names the same amount, so really it's between Hattie/Hettie or Pippa which she will be introduced as and called as her everyday name. Does Hettie work for Harriet or would Henrietta be better, not sure if it's a bit too long and fussy sounding?

I also have a love of Poppy, doesn't fit our criteria of being longer or traditional but still really like it when I hear it and can't bring myself to strike it off the list yet. Any thoughts? Thanks Smile

Love Philippa nn pippa. Not keen on the other one at all.

Other considerations

Elizabeth (liz/lizzy/betty/betsy/Elsie/beth/Bette)

Katherine ( Kathy, Kate, Katie, kitty)

Charlotte (Lottie, Charley)

Dorothea (Dottie, dot, thea)

Emmeline (emmie, em)

Eleanora (Elle, Ellie, nell)

Philippa is lovely, as is Henrietta. Harriet is also nice, though not so pretty and romantic. I'm not keen on Poppy and it doesn't have any options for nn.

TroubledLichen · 26/08/2018 14:33

Love Harriet. Hattie is great, Hettie feels a bit forced. Would you consider Henrietta if you love Hettie? Although personally I much prefer Hattie/Harriet.

I’m not keen on Pippa but you’ve mentioned my reasons for disliking it as a non-issue for you.

I know so many dogs called Poppy I can’t think of it as a human name anymore.

MollyHuaCha · 26/08/2018 14:38

Harriet (Hattie) is lovely

Or Poppy can surely be a nn for Philippa?

Peachbubble · 26/08/2018 15:26

Love Harriet. Fine to use Hattie/Hettie I think.

Sophronia · 26/08/2018 15:40

I like Philippa, it’s more unusual than Harriet.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2018 15:49

I like both Philippa & Harriet. Henrietta not so much. I think either Hattie or Hettie work as diminutives of Harriet.

I'm not keen on Poppy, it's a bit babyish sounding to me. However, I've heard of it used as a slightly unusual diminutive of Penelope & I do like that. I think it's used in Greece, but don't quote me on that.

Love Phillipa / Pippa, also love Harriet / Hettie (would definitely use Hettie).
Also like Kathleen (less common than Katherine) Kathie/Kit/ Kath
Annabelle / Ana/ belle
Josephine / Josie
Jocelyn/ Joss

Icklepup · 26/08/2018 16:12

I like Harriet

Maireadd · 26/08/2018 17:40

Philippa “Pippa” is gorgeous!

buttercup54321 · 26/08/2018 19:20

phillipa or Felicity

Enidblyton1 · 26/08/2018 19:34

Love Philippa, Harriet and Henrietta.
If you like Hettie, I think you should go for Henrietta, as it would feel forced from Harriet.
I know a few Harriets and they are all known as Harri/Harry/Haribo.
The two Henrietta’s I know are both Hetty (though I guess you could shorten to Henry)
Love Pippa shortening for Philippa, but both of my Philippa friends are known as Phil. You can’t always control a nickname. School friends have a habit of coming up with new ones...

pinkyredrose · 26/08/2018 19:37

What are the connotations of Pippa?

ReginaPhalange89 · 26/08/2018 19:49

Phillipa is gorgeous, love Pippa. Also really like Harriet but not keen on the nn's as much as Pippa !

daisypond · 26/08/2018 20:00

I like Philippa/Pippa a lot. I like Henrietta too, and Hettie is nice as a short form. I'm not keen on Harriet at all - it's got a dull and worthy servant vibe to me that I don't like. I like Poppy too - a tall colourful flower. I don't find it cutesy and it's not a diminutive, so I like it.

cptartapp · 26/08/2018 20:04

I like Harriet and Philippa in their entirety. No contrived nn.
Poppy is awful. Infantile.
Elizabeth, Jennifer, Victoria, Alexandra, Georgina, Roseanne, Catherine?

Honeybee79 · 26/08/2018 20:15

Really like Henrietta and Hettie or Etta for short.

foxtiger · 27/08/2018 18:31

What is the meaning of Pippa in other counties? Which counties?

MikeUniformMike · 27/08/2018 18:35

Philippa nn Pippa and Harriet nn Hattie are both fine. Hetty is a vacuum cleaner.

toothtruth · 27/08/2018 18:37

I love Henrietta!

TroubledLichen · 27/08/2018 18:38

Not Pippa persay but in French pipe (but it’s pronounced more like Pip) is slang for blow job. So having known Phillippas/Pippas who get called Pip as a NN would rule the name out for me but only because we have family in France! Not sure if there are other naughty meanings in other languages...

thefarrierswife · 27/08/2018 22:52

Thanks for all your comments, nice to get others opinions as we aren't discussing names with anyone in real life.

I understand what a lot of you about mean Poppy and falls under the sort if names I'm not usually keen on, maybe best used for the next dog!

Love Lottie short for Charlotte but we already have a horse who's Lottie and is here to stay, so that's a no go otherwise would be a strong contender! Elizabeth is lovely as are some other names mentioned but we can't use.

I've heard Pippa is slang for some sexual acts abroad. If it ever did pose as a problem when older she can use full name Philippa like Pippa Funnel did for the Olympics when they were held in Greece. To me it's not really an issue.

Still undecided, think Pippa and Hattie are more likely than Hettie atm. Maybe we'll have to see what she looks like!
