I've seen this week Crispin and Rupert as posh names, what others would you group as quite posh? Boys or girls names.

St John? Is there a boy who's actually named St John??? And Toby, really?

What does 'posh' mean? Elegant, classic?

Sebastian, Hugo, Rupert, Arabella, Aurelia often get mentioned but I find those names really nice. Maybe I like 'posh' names?

DolorestheNewt · 24/08/2018 14:40

St John Yes. I know one. It's pronounced Sinjun. There's also a St John in Jane Eyre (St John Rivers, who proposes to Jane before she returns to Rochester).

Posh means when you travel to India your cabin is on the port side of the ship and when you travel back to Britain from India your cabin is on the starboard side :p

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2018 14:47

Continuing from DieAntword’s reminder if the origin of the term “POSH” - cabins which were “Portside Out, Starboard Home” were largeky in the shade for the journeys to/from India, and so we’re more desirable and expensive. Posh became used as a descriptor for people who could afford the finer things in life - not just the journey, not just cabins, but the best ones.

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/08/2018 14:49

Well, I’ve learnt something today! Thank you Bike Grin
I also know a St John and was thoroughly perplexed when I saw his name written down. Guess I’m showing my classWinkWink

Sunflower321 · 24/08/2018 14:54

Thanks Die Antword and Bike! I had no idea where the word came from!

DieAntword · 24/08/2018 14:57

Apparently it’s probably just a folk etymology but it is a compelling one. They think it might actually come from a Roma word but no one really knows.

Gavin? That sounds the opposite of posh!

PasswordRejection · 24/08/2018 16:46

Posh was used as a slang term for money. So it's more likely that it, over time, came to be used to describe someone with lots of money.

I know Sunflower, it’s an odd choice isn’t it? But he is super, proper upper class.
