For a boy

Samuel James

Or Rhys James but only this spelling

For a girl Phoebe Emilia or Annie but not sure any of your choices really work as a middle name due to similar endings

ReginaPhalange89 · 23/08/2018 11:00

I actually really like most of those names !

Because most of the 'old names' are quite popular now I think I'd personally rule out William, Charlie & George as they're quite common. I do love George though I really like Samuel and Jenson, so I'd choose one or those myself. Probably Samuel if I have to pick.

The girls names are all lovely too. I have a Phoebe and I've loved the name forever, so that always gets my vote. I also love Ivy and Ayda (though I'd spell it Ada I think).
Again, Eva/Ava/Emilia are all very common, so I'd rule those out, although all lovely names. Nancy is the only one I'm not really keen on.

So for me ! Samuel/Jenson for a boy, Phoebe/Ada/Ivy for a girl Smile

Buddyelf · 23/08/2018 11:05

I like most of your choices actually! My favourites are
William
Samuel
Charlie

Emilia
Eva
Darcy - I would spell Darcie though
Phoebe

Boys:
James is one of the most common middle names (or the most common?) for boys in the UK. Which is why I personally wouldn't go for a top 20 name...

  • William: nice but rather popular.

  • George: too popular.

  • Samuel: nice.

  • Charlie: Charles is nice. Charlie is cutesy/nickname-y imo.

  • Reece: Rhys would be very nice.

  • Jenson: I know a great guy named Jensen. Which is probably why the Jenson spelling seems a bit strange to me...

  • Ava: imo very boring.

  • Ayda: not my cup of tea.

  • Alissa: it's ok.

  • Annie: I prefer Anne/a nn Annie.

  • Emilia: very nice.

  • Eva: popular but classic. It's really nice imo.

  • Edie: Is this short for Edith?

  • Darcy: I personally dislike it.

  • Ivy: cute.

  • Nancy: adorable :)

  • Phoebe: lovely.

Laconia234 · 23/08/2018 11:11

William, George & Samuel are all classic and lovely
Charlie is nice, but it should be short for Charles, so that he has a more professional, less childish name for when he needs it.
Reece - much nicer when spelt Rhys, otherwise it seems a little chavvy/very American to me
Jenson - I don't like it myself

Ava - beautiful but very popular at the moment
Ayda - Ada is the traditional spelling, very nice name
Alissa - I prefer Alicia, pronounced A-li-cee-a
Annie - lovely if short for Anne/Anna/Annabel etc. Probably my favourite on your list as it's lovely but not overused
Emilia - I've never particularly liked this name, it seems a bit pretentious/flouncy, plus she'd be constantly correcting people - no it's Emilia with an e and an i, not Amelia
Eva - lovely but way too popular
Edie - lovely
Darcy - ok, a little chavvy. I prefer the spelling Darcey for a girl.
Ivy - lovely
Nancy - classic and underused. A really strong name. I know a 12 year old Nancy and it suits her 100%.
Phoebe - I like it for a child, less for an adult

Laconia234 · 23/08/2018 11:14

So overall, and with the middle name, by favourites are:

BOYS
William James
Samuel James
Rhys James
(I like George, but it doesn't go well with James)

GIRLS
Nancy Alissa/Nancy Alicia - I think this is a beautiful combination
Edie Alissa/Edie Alicia
Annabel Eva

TatianaLarina · 23/08/2018 11:58

Phoebe or Nancy are great.

Eva and Ava are just too over-popular. Don’t like the others.

George or William. Hate Reece and Jenson.

Belindabauer · 23/08/2018 11:59

I like William and Edie best.

kenandbarbie · 23/08/2018 12:06

Boys (middle name will be james due to family tradition)
William lovely
George lovely
Samuel lovely
Charlie would prefer Charles
Reece don't like
Jenson dont like

Girls (middle name is going to be our second choice name)
Ava too popular
Ayda don't like
Alissa don't like
Annie ok
Emilia lovely
Eva too popular
Edie too of the moment
Darcy see above
Ivy lovely
Nancy lovely

Phoebe ok

GirlfriendInAKorma · 23/08/2018 12:34

Reece and Jenson sound nice naughty boys.

The girls names are ok but a lot are very popular at the moment (judging by my DDs friend's names). Girls names starting with vowels all blend into one in my head and I can never remember who is who in her class... is that Eva, Ava, Amelia or Edie?!

GirlfriendInAKorma · 23/08/2018 12:35

*nice = like.

Joeybee · 23/08/2018 12:54

These are just my personal opinions, remeber everyone has different tastes, and also I don't know how these names would flow with your surname either.

William - LOVE this name, I just wish it wasn't so popular. I really like Bill as a nickname, I just love 'old man' names on little boys.

George - LOVe this name too. It's strong, but sweet, grows well from a child into adulthood. I think it would be hard to make a judgement of a George, they could be any type of person.

Samuel - This would be the name I'd use for the baby I'm about to have....if only I could convince my Husband. I just think it is such a timeless, classic name. Also Sam is a cool nickname.

Charlie - Not a fan of 'nicknames' as first names. I like Charlie, but as a nickname for Charles. Also to me, Charlie has become way too popular.

Reece - Like this name, but more on a girl.

Jenson - Just think of the F1 driver and can't disassociate.

Ava - Nice, simple name. Quite a strong name, but very very popular, which puts me off a little.
Ayda - She'd have to spell out her name her whle life...trust me that gets annoying.
Alissa -Same as above.
Annie - As a nickname for Anne/Annabel then I like this name.
Emilia - People would probably assume it was 'Amelia' and she'd have to spend her life correcting people.
Eva - LOVE this name...don't understand why it's not used more. A good alternative to the super popular Ava.
Edie - OMG LOVE this as a nickname for Edith.
Darcy - A bit common...I've only ever heard this name screeched through supermarkets!
Ivy - A bit plain as a first name, but a great middle name.
Nancy - YES...why is this name not more popular. Not much nickname potential though.
Phoebe - A simple name, an old lady name which is really ready to come back. Also like Penelope, which is a similar name IMO.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 23/08/2018 13:02

All your boys names are nice

Emilia is lovely and timeless- my personal favourite

oopsydaisy92 · 23/08/2018 13:05

TroubledLichen · 23/08/2018 13:57

From your lists I like the following:
Boys:
William - my favourite for a boy
George
Samuel
Girls:
Emilia
Ivy
Nancy - my favourite for a girl
Phoebe

Cheeseplantandpickle · 23/08/2018 13:58

George and Phoebe.

peterpanwendy · 23/08/2018 14:01

George James

Edie Phoebe

MerryMarigold · 23/08/2018 14:01

George James and Jenson James don't work. I like Samuel James best.

Girls you can't do Ivy Nancy or Alissa Emilia as they end same way. I love Edie but only name it goes well with is Alissa. I also like Nancy. Sounds good with Anne (not Annie) so Nancy Anne.

MerryMarigold · 23/08/2018 14:02

Edie Phoebe is a no no. Too much 'eeee' going on.

Laconia234 · 23/08/2018 14:51

I love Anneliese as a long name for Annie.

Sophronia · 23/08/2018 15:06

William James and Annie Emilia

LJFM2B · 23/08/2018 15:56

Thanks for your honesty, although there's such a mix of opinions it hasnt massively narrowed it down haha

It does prove my DH right when he says " lets just do what we want as everybody has an opinion on whats nice and whats too cute or old etc and its us and our baby who will have to live with the name we choose so its our opinion that matters" ... i think i worry too much about other peoples opinions.

thank you all xx

There are various Mumsnet threads about people liking or disliking their names. (This is one I started: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3319113-How-do-you-feel-about-your-name-And-why-is-there-a-specific-reason?pg=10&order=)

I think that names which won't be constantly mispronounced / misspelled are definitely the way to go (which is why I would not go with Ayda or Alissa).

Using nicknames as a full given name /for the bc (Annie/Charlie) is a bad idea imo as well.

Someone named Annabel may go by Annie or quite a few other nns.

Someone named Annie probably could not go by Annabel or any of the other possible nicknames (Bel, Bells, Bella, Anne, Nab etc).

Alloverthefrontpage · 23/08/2018 16:10

Ivy Emilia

Rhys James- really dislike the other spellings.
