Honest opinions on Rupert?

I really love the name Rupert but can imagine people pulling a Confused face behind our backs when we tell them.

What is the MN opinion on the name? Would the child grow up hating it? Anyone know any school aged Ruperts and do they pull it off?

Confusedcute for a kid, poncy for an adult.

What would it be shortened to? Because even if you don't shorten it, someone else will!

Haint · 22/08/2018 20:25

Aspirational.

I love all the Roos - Rupert, Reuben, Rufus. All really lovely.

Itchytights · 22/08/2018 20:45

I know one and he’s a sweetie but the name is ponsy and also very drippy.

Not my cup of tea but horses for courses

buttercup54321 · 22/08/2018 23:13

Rupert the Bear

foxtiger · 23/08/2018 17:48

I don't like it, I'm afraid - there's something about the sound that always makes me think of someone blowing a raspberry! I like Robert, which comes from the same root words.

MrsMolehillMountain · 23/08/2018 17:52

I like it. It's got more character than more popular names like Harry and Jack

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 23/08/2018 17:55

Prefer Reuben, nickname Reu.

OutPinked · 23/08/2018 18:15

My dad’s best friend growing up was Rupert. I’ve always liked the name as a result.

It’s a lovely name. Obvs has the Rupert the bear connotation but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Never stops people using Thomas.

Sunflower321 · 23/08/2018 19:06

Great solid name!

SylvanianFrenemies · 23/08/2018 19:08

Awful. Pretentious, wet, silly. Reminds me of Ruprecht in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Sorry!

Shampooeeee · 23/08/2018 19:23

It’s a regal name. Makes me think of German kings and princes!
We’ve got one already in the wider family so I don’t want to use it for my DC, but I love it.
Most Ruperts I have known have been a little bit posh but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The coolest Rupert I know is a surfer dude who goes by Roo.

Pudding01 · 23/08/2018 19:57

I really like the name Rupert!

I don't think it's too try hard and I don't find it pretentious.. Yes it's slightly posher than some names, but is that really a bad thing? In a world full of Jaydens & Jaxxons, I'd rather be a Rupert 💁🏼‍♀️🤣

Rupert the bear. NO.
Arthur was my dad's name (ok for old men, my dad would have been 99 now)

I meant Yes!

pieceofpurplesky · 23/08/2018 20:22

Rufus?

Getfitmumma · 23/08/2018 21:01

Went to school with one. Got a bit of stick from time to time but he was alright and from a nice family

TatianaLarina · 23/08/2018 21:22

Far too middle class and try-hard.

Aspirational

How do you know OP isn’t middle class, then she’s not trying or aspiring is she?

TatianaLarina · 23/08/2018 21:24

No-one ever complained about Rupert Campbell-Black being wet.

A cad, sure.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/08/2018 18:56

People will have a tendency to swap the R for a W, presumably making it sound even wetter than they already perceive it to be.

"Why don't you come awound on Fwiday for some cweam macawoons, Woopert?"

Sunflower321 · 24/08/2018 19:02

Do they do that with Rory too? Wowy Grin

Ploppymoodypants · 24/08/2018 19:05

Love it. Great name. If DD has been a boy she would have been called Rupert (nn Bear).

I confess to being a tiny bit influenced by my love of Rupert Campbell-Black. BUt still a great name.

If there is one thing I have learned, and that’s not to give a monkeys what anyone else thinks about your name choice. Don’t ask people if they like it. Just tell them that’s what it is. Both my DD names have been absolute marmite, but I don’t care. I still love them.

People will roll eyes at all sorts of reason.
I.e.
a) ooh that’s a bit out there (insert a non top 20 baby name
b) oh ‘another’ Ellie/Millie/Gracie/Alfie/Oscar etc
c) ooh that’s a bit try hard (insert Rupert, Ophelia etc)
d) oh how chavvy (insert Tracy/Darren etc)
e) oh how dated (Sophie, Chloe, claire, Louise)

But essentially all of the above are nice names. And ALL that matters is that you love it.
