Which name?!

Hello! My husband and both disagree on almost every other boy name out there, but while we were travelling in Wales, we met the sweetest man whose first name was Shepherd. We were taken aback (because isn't that a surname)? But now we love it. We love it enough to name our son Shepherd due in a few weeks. Opinions ?! Thanks!

I like it

Maireadd · 21/08/2018 22:04

Shep for short is particularly sweet

DramaAlpaca · 21/08/2018 22:22

No! Shep was a wonderful border collie on Blue Peter I'm old enough to remember so to me it's a dogs' name.

Sophronia · 22/08/2018 04:24

I like it

piggie88 · 22/08/2018 05:08

I like it too

RedDwarves · 22/08/2018 11:02

I like it.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2018 11:04

She’s is an awful shortening.

And people will not be able to resist making sheep jokes thinking they are the first one to notice. No.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2018 11:04

*Shep

Icklepup · 22/08/2018 11:12

I like it

Perfectly1mperfect · 22/08/2018 11:14

I think he would have a tough time at secondary school, sorry.

pouraglasshalffull · 22/08/2018 12:37

No, he will get bullied

PassportBridgetPants · 22/08/2018 13:22

Love it! Would use if it didn't sound totally stupid with my surname...

Quangot · 22/08/2018 14:21

I think it makes a good name, regardless of Shep the dog. There are loads of occupation surnames used as first names at the moment, such as Archer, Mason, Carter, Dexter, Taylor, Hunter, Spencer etc. Shepherd would be a nice change.

Redsharks · 22/08/2018 14:23

I like it, but think it would greatly depend on how it sounded with your surname. With mine it would sound awful.

Shep is a cute nickname. One he may not wish to have when he's trying to be a cool teenager however!

Scottishgirl85 · 22/08/2018 21:23

I'm surprised at the positive reaction, I think it would be very weird as a first name and give your son a really difficult time at school.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/08/2018 21:48

Definitely a surname; never heard of it as a first name.
I've known of a dog called Shep though!
(Sorry)

buttercup54321 · 22/08/2018 22:28

Be ready for lots of jokes and teasing and singing The Lords my Shepherd.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/08/2018 22:29

Awful.

Shep or Herd

Nothing nice about it at all.

CherryPlum · 22/08/2018 22:49

Shepherd?? Nooo, that's not a name, surely? I really think the man was pulling your leg.

I can't believe anyone would dream of calling a baby Shepherd, it would be cruel.

Cazastrophe · 22/08/2018 23:07

No... at school he may be asked: ‘are you coming to German, Shepherd? 🤪

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 22/08/2018 23:16

If it works with your surname, I can’t see why not.
