Sounds like a nickname!

I do like Jeremy though

EmmaC78 · 21/08/2018 18:41

Sounds too feminine for a boy.

Cheeseplantandpickle · 21/08/2018 18:41

I like it.

mintich · 21/08/2018 18:41

Reminds me of the cartoon, so I'd think of a girl

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 21/08/2018 18:42

I know one. He's a sweet little boy.

HouseOfSix · 21/08/2018 18:42

I know of one aged about 7ish? His proper name is James but he's been Jem since he was newborn. I think it's lovely

AtticaRose · 21/08/2018 18:43

Reminds me of the Anne of Green Gables character (in one of the later books) - very nice. I think there it's a nickname for James.

BiggerBoat1 · 21/08/2018 18:43

Doesn't sound like a real name, so no!

EllenRipley · 21/08/2018 18:43

I really like it!

Partly because it's the name of a sci-fi book by Frederick Pohl that I loved.

GoatYoga · 21/08/2018 18:43

It’s not great.

OrdinaryGirl · 21/08/2018 18:44

I knew a lovely Jeremy who went by Jem. Think it would be a bit baffling just as a name on its own.

olderthanyouthink · 21/08/2018 18:47

Isn't there someone (a man) of the BBC called Jem, a doctor or scientist I think....

daisypond · 21/08/2018 18:47

Nice as a short form for Jeremy - not as a name in itself. Jem's the boy in To Kill A Mockingbird and it's very associated with the character to me.

olderthanyouthink · 21/08/2018 18:49

Yeah, I was right

I think I like the name Jem

Elphabaisnotwicked · 21/08/2018 18:52

I adore it, would probably put James on the birth certificate but have loved it since reading To Kill A Mockingbird at about 12 or 13

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/08/2018 18:53

I love Jem. Know a gorgeous little one.

Ooogetyooo · 21/08/2018 18:53

No. Just no

jmscp2015 · 21/08/2018 18:54

I love it, but I love to kill a mockingbird so that's probably why Smile

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/08/2018 18:55

Very 'To kill a mockingbird' - not a bad thing!

Though to me it is more of a nickname & feminine sounding.

Beagle840 · 21/08/2018 18:55

Personally I find it too feminine but if you like it, that's all that matters. I was really nervous about my unusual name choice for my DD but so pleased I held my nerve and went for it because I still love it now.

I think once children are born, they grow into their names and everyone gets used to them.

Cbeebiesrehab · 21/08/2018 18:58

Great as a NN but would probably put something a bit more formal on the BC to give him options when he’s older :) x

kenandbarbie · 21/08/2018 19:01

Ok for a nickname for Jeremy or James, otherwise it sounds like a cartoon character - who's a girl.

mondler · 21/08/2018 19:01

I remember it from to kill a mockingbird. If I were to hear someone say 'Jem' I'd guess a shortened version of Gemma but written down it could be either (I know a Jemma too). It's a nice name but I'd have it more as a knickname but that's just me. If you love it go for it.
