Are these truly terrible names?

Hello Smile. Me and DH have decided on two names for our DD when she arrives 1)Leilani (pronounced Lay-larn-ee, not sure how we're going to spell that yet) meaning: Heavenly flowers. And 2) Eyanah (pronounced Ay-yah-nah) meaning: educated/ a pretty flower.
MIL hates them both and says she'll cringe every time she has to call her grand daughter. One of DH's friends gave us a bit of a face when we told him. Are these names really that bad/ which one do you prefer?
Thank you so much!

Imo any name you have to remind people how to spell /pronounce is madness!!

Rebecca36 · 18/08/2018 22:24

Awful. She won't thank you for those names when she's older.

formerbabe · 18/08/2018 22:25

I like Leilani.

I think Eyanah sounds nice but would be easier if it was spelt Ayana.

StorminaTCut · 18/08/2018 22:26

The first one reminds me of a tree. Leylandi & the second one makes me think of banana.

Sorry OP, I dont think they are great and I mean that nicely. They are very awkard sounding.

Ohyesiam · 18/08/2018 22:26

They are quite “ frilly “. Which language/ culture are they from?

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 18/08/2018 22:26

Have you considered Leila?

Bella898 · 18/08/2018 22:26

Setting the child up for a life-time of "no it's pronounced like this", "no it's spelt like this".
The 2nd one is less awkward/difficult though

AdelaideK · 18/08/2018 22:26

I wouldn't give both of those names. It's a bit too much.

Either on its own with a less unusual middle name would be nicer. Imo.

BigBlueBubble · 18/08/2018 22:27

Leilani is nice. I’d stick with the accepted spelling though - it’s unusual enough without changing the normal spelling. Don’t like Eyanah.

pumpkinpie01 · 18/08/2018 22:27

She will spend her whole life pronouncing her name which will drive her mad, there are plenty of other pretty and unusual yet easily prounouncable names out there !

SmilingButClueless · 18/08/2018 22:27

Don’t mind Leilani but Eyanah is horrible.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 18/08/2018 22:28

Not sure how we’re going to spell that yet Have you just made it up? Confused
It sounds like a type of privet hedge. And they both sound awful, however you decide to spell them.

Pearlgrey1 · 18/08/2018 22:28

I’ve heard worse but people will definitely pronounce them wrong.

Wellmeaning · 18/08/2018 22:30

Another thumbs down I’m afraid.
Have you made them up yourself?you can tell Agree about them being ‘frilly’. In a bright satin pink kinda way.
Do you think you might like some classic French names, with lots of vowels and syllables?
Such as Delphine, for example.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 18/08/2018 22:30

Leilani is a lovely name. That's the only spelling I know for it.

I like the sound of Eyanah, but not the spelling. I know one spelled Ayana.

Stormwhale · 18/08/2018 22:31

Leilani definitely reminds me of a tree too.

Sarahandduck18 · 18/08/2018 22:31

Lelannie
And
Ianna

Are better spellings

kiylahskies · 18/08/2018 22:31

i love how they sound! but you're kind of right, i spent a childhood doing that

OP posts:
kiylahskies · 18/08/2018 22:32

i was thinking of maybe spelling it ayanah

w4ytoomuch · 18/08/2018 22:32

I know two Leilanis. Personally I think it's a beautiful name Smile

kiylahskies · 18/08/2018 22:33

no - i haven't made them up i've just seen multiple spelling for it

Haffdonga · 18/08/2018 22:34

Are those names are specific to your cultural heritage? Will your dcs grow up in the UK or within their 'name' culture? For the English speaking UK those names would be quite hard work.

Leilani sounds very similar to Leylandi (the terrible giant overgrowing hedges that everyone wants to get cut down) so out of your choices I'd have to go for the Ayahna,

Orchiddingme · 18/08/2018 22:34

I've heard of Leilani and think it's pretty, probably wouldn't choose it myself, but it's a nice name and just outside the top 100 so not completely unusual.

Eyanah, nope, I've prefer something like Aya/Ayah or even the overpopular Ava.

Starlighter · 18/08/2018 22:35

She’s going to spend her whole life correcting people on how to spell and/or pronounce her name. They sound quite overly fussy.

Could you streamline them a bit?
Leila
Layla
Lana
Aya
Larna
Aria
Enya

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 18/08/2018 22:36

The first one puts me in mind of a shrub. The second will just get shortened to yahna as soon as she hits school because no one will be bothered to pronounce it. Your kids really won't thank you for saddling them with ridiculous names that no one can spell or pronounce.
