Help me pick an Irish name for ds!

Hi all, we're looking for an Irish boys name for baby due in a few weeks. We live in Ireland and other dc's also have Irish names. Surname begins with H and has one syllable (if that makes any difference!)

OH likes Senan and Cian. (Think I prefer Cian out of those two)

I like Oisín... love the sound of it, I would pronounce it Oh-sheen and not Uh-sheen. Slightly concerned about giving him a name that could cause spelling/pronunciation problems outside of Ireland though?!

Other names I've vaguely considered are Liam and Rory.

Any thoughts?

My dc go to a gaelscoil where all the Oisíns that I know of are Oh-sheen. My Pil also speak Irish as their first language and would pronounce it the same way.

My ds is Oisín and we're in England. Yes i occasionally correct people (if i can be bothered) but i kind of expected "oh how is that pronounced". Its quite a conversation starter over here and they like asking about its origin. We pronounce it Uhsheen as pp said.

Deadringer · 14/08/2018 19:18

I love Donnacha, Cian, Sean and Cael.

dublinducks1 · 14/08/2018 19:55

Arlen
Pierce

FirstofhisName · 14/08/2018 20:15

RosaRoll, I can imagine but glad you went with Oisín despite the pronunciation issues! I'm really drawn to it. My sister has Tadhg in England and has to explain it as "tiger" without the "er" Smile

Oisín and Cian are still the front-runners but I'm so unsure Confused

Not a native speaker, but surely for Oh-sheen you need a fada on the O? Or am I misunderstanding your preferred pronounciation?

LivLemler · 14/08/2018 20:31

Oh, and I love Cian. Would've been on our boy list but we know a couple.

RosaRoll · 14/08/2018 20:32

@FirstofhisName go for it!!! Just expect the questions on origin/pronouncing etc. Its no big deal really. But also people remember my son doctor/GP/nurse/hv etc as its so unique hereGrin

Also accept the slight variations on pronouncination no matter how you say it. say to people i say 'Ush-een' and that its also pronounced oh-sheen in other parts of Ireland. Some still say Oisín but i dont mind. Im not too mithered.

FirstofhisName · 14/08/2018 21:11

RosaRoll yes, it's the one name I keep coming back to Smile

LivLemler I totally understand your point about how there should be a fada over the O. Can't explain it other than it's just a different way of saying it.

Cian has a much harsher sound, would never have considered it before but it's growing on me!

villainousbroodmare · 14/08/2018 21:42

No fada on the o of Oisín. "Ois" makes an "ush" sound. "Óis" would be "OH-ish".

Picknickers · 14/08/2018 22:36

I love Oisin.

FirstofhisName · 14/08/2018 22:49

I know there's no fada on the O. I'm also aware of how the fada changes the sound.

Oops, didn't RTFT! Odd pronunciation you've chosen, OP, and yes, you need to use Ó for it to make any sense. Irish speakers will generally pronounce it USH-een.

tigercub50 · 14/08/2018 22:58

Cormac is a tarmac laying company!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 15/08/2018 00:00

So what? Confused. It’s a well established boys name in Ireland.

violets17 · 15/08/2018 00:07

I didn't know Tadgh was Tiger without the er.

I'm English and thought I was pretty clever for "knowing" it was Teeg. Ah well.

HotblackDesiatoto · 15/08/2018 00:10

I like Oisín... love the sound of it, I would pronounce it Oh-sheen and not Uh-sheen.

It isnt pronounced Oh Sheen though, and you cant just invent a pronounciation. Say it properly or don't say it at all!

Scabetty · 15/08/2018 00:14

I like Lorcan and Cillian.

Mammysin · 15/08/2018 00:15

MacDara
Padraig
Fiachra
SeoirsE
Darragh
Cormac
Naoise

FirstofhisName · 15/08/2018 08:33

OK Hotblack I won't say anything at all... Hmm Certainly haven't invented a pronunciation. It's a well establisted one where I live.

Love Darragh but it's my ds name Smile

On the maybe list:
Liam (OH not keen)
Rory/Ruairi
Cillian

Cormac is out as it does go with surname!
What do people think of Rian? I like it but think it sounds more feminine?

OP posts:
SisterNotCisTerf · 15/08/2018 09:24

I know a Rian boy. He’s the only Rian I know so to me it’s not feminine.

WaxOnFeckOff · 15/08/2018 11:55

I have a Ciar (rather than Ciaran) as he wasn't and isn't little.

I also like Cormac but see you can't use it.

I also know a Sé which is nice

From your list I think I'd go for Ruairi but appreciate that names sound different in different accents and have a different "feel" in different places.

villainousbroodmare · 15/08/2018 12:27

Rian and Ruan both nice. Conn? Iarla?

ClinkyMonkey · 15/08/2018 12:30

Go for Oisin. I love it and reckon that's a good enough reason!

Jenna43 · 15/08/2018 12:51

I'm Irish and have never heard Oisin pronounced Oh-sheen. It's either Ush-een or Osh-een(awe-sheen)
