hi! my husband's irish, and we absolutely adore the name "jackie" on a boy--our son is due in early October, and we're pretty set on it, but some opinions would be nice! any thoughts?! thanks!

To me Jackie is a very dated female name.
Why not just Jack?

Pudding01 · 13/08/2018 07:00

Really sorry, but I see Jackie as an older woman's name.
Jack may be a suitable alternative? Could always call him jackie/jacky as a NN x

newcupcake · 13/08/2018 07:10

For a boy I'd assume his name was Jack and it was a nickname

flumpybear · 13/08/2018 07:12

Please just do this as a nickname - jacky Jackie is bloody awful for man or woman

LadyGAgain · 13/08/2018 07:14

What @flumpybear said

Sophronia · 13/08/2018 07:18

It’s fine as a nickname for Jack.

TheLastUNIC0RN · 13/08/2018 07:34

I'm Irish and had a lovely great uncle Jackie. His name was jack (though no one called him it) and Jackie a nn.

Bristolgal · 13/08/2018 07:39

There was a post here recently where a mum was asking for advice as her teenage son, Jackie, was being teased/ ridiculed for having a woman's name, and he was struggling to deal with it. I can't find the link unfortunately!
To me, it's fine as a male name. But i would personally avoid it for the reasons above.

FlappyFeet · 13/08/2018 07:43

I know a Jacky. He's 18 and everyone loves him.

SuperstarDJ · 13/08/2018 07:45

I’m Irish too. The Male Jackies that I know are all of the older generation and Jackie is a nn rather than the name on their BC. Their actual names are Jack or John.

FannyCornforth · 13/08/2018 07:48

The lad who was being teased was Sandy.

FannyCornforth · 13/08/2018 07:50

I think I'd go for Jack officially too, and use Jackie informally.

AnguaResurgam · 13/08/2018 07:55

I note you put Jackie in inverted commas.

Is there an Irish spelling of it? If so, use that. He can always shorten/Anglicise it to Jack if he wants to.

If not, then I would call him Jack, and use Jackey as the parental nn, and see which version he chooses and uses later on.

Quangot · 13/08/2018 08:41

I don't like it. Could be a nickname for Jacob though (I don't like Jack)

Firtreefir · 13/08/2018 10:11

Definitely an older woman's name.

Call him Jack/Jacob/James, and use Jackie as a family nickname.

Calling him Jackie by itself is cruel and opening him up to a world of bullying.

ReginaPhalange89 · 13/08/2018 20:24

Sorry I don't like it all all, it's an old name to me . I know one male Jackie and he's in his 70s, not even his real name (it's John). Other than that it's a female name to me .

Like others suggested I'd have Jack and use it as a nn
