What is Sadhbh’s sister called?

Due dc2 next spring- boys name sorted as we’re using a family name. Having more trouble with a girls name.

Dd is Sadhbh (pronounced Sive, rhymes with 5) which was DH’s pick. Ideally would go for another Irish name, but every irish girl’s name I’ve looked at is either

  1. Hideous (looking at you, Gobnait) Or
  2. very frequently used as it isn’t hideous (lovely names like Aoife and Ciara)

We are in Ireland so spelling etc isn’t an issue. I like Elinor, so it doesn’t need to be an Irish name (but I don’t love it).

Please hit me with inspiration- DH has just seriously suggested Blaithín so I’ve given up there.

Ooh i do like Elinor OP!

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2018 00:01

Yer one from the Saturdays is spelled Úna though, which sounds a tiny bit more modern than Oonagh, but still would sit a bit oddly on a baby. I don't know an Úna under the age of 50. Give it another 20 years & I predict a revival.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 13/08/2018 00:04

I also have a Sadhbh :)

Would name a sister Siobhan probably!

I heard Siofra the other day, which I thought was lovely.

Elinor is lovely (prefer that spelling over Eleanor). I also like Elin.

HelenUrth · 13/08/2018 00:31

Have come across most of these names through Irish speaking distant rellies.

Think it has to be Caoimhe (pronounced Kweeva).

But a possibility could be Muiríosa (pronounced Marissa) ? Although not sure if it has religious connotations Shock

I think Sadhbh and Caoimhe sound the best out of everything suggested so far!

I like Tamar too. I’m probably spelling these wrong!

ToesInWater · 13/08/2018 08:52

I had a friend called Blathin - I quite like it 😁 (sorry, can't find a fada on my keyboard). I was going to say Saoirse but understand why not. Sorcha could be an alternative or Caoimhe or Deirbhile would go with Sadhbh. My daughter has one of the names often mentioned above and we live in Australia. Luckily she loves her name as it can be hard work!

helvetica01 · 13/08/2018 11:40

@dinosaurkisses Saoirse is gorgeous! What are the connotations? Confused

Please don't go with Grainne per a PP's suggestion - it sounds too similar to Groin Sad

EleanorRigbey · 13/08/2018 11:52

Saoirse means 'Freedom'.

EleanorRigbey · 13/08/2018 11:55

*Today 11:52 EleanorRigbey

Saoirse means 'Freedom'.*

Posted too soon. The OP said she lives in NI.

Redteapot67 · 13/08/2018 12:03

I don’t think you should have two s names

IWouldLikeToKnow · 13/08/2018 12:40

I love Caoimhe, but also Afric.

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/08/2018 12:42

I love Grainne

noseoftralee · 13/08/2018 12:46

Oonagh ? Er no.

Clodagh definitely making a comeback round these parts.

Orla getting trendy in England, lots of my English friends seem to be using it , no Irish connections.

Google a few NI GAA players and see what they named their daughters, you might get a few nice names in there :)

SgtFredColon · 13/08/2018 12:48

Laoise is lovely.

Sessy19 · 13/08/2018 12:51

Is Grainne pronounced a bit like groin??? 😳

noseoftralee · 13/08/2018 12:55

sessy - Graw (rhyme with straw) + in + ya

It gets a bit mangled in the English accent. Grainne Seoighe didn't last long on Breakfast telly in the UK. Adrian Chiles couldn't pronounce her name for the links.

DamnCommandments · 13/08/2018 12:58

Reidín?

SpacePenguin · 13/08/2018 13:34

I think Oonagh or Muireann would be fab with Sadhbh. Or something like Mairsile (Irish version of Marcella) or Noirín.

I agree that you shouldn't go for something with an 'easy' spelling. Better to try to keep it relatively even - though Sadhbh is probably one of the most difficult.

Firtreefir · 13/08/2018 22:23

Sharon Horgan from Catastrophe has a daughter called Sadhbh, her other daughter is called Amer

Rainatnight · 13/08/2018 22:26

I came on to say Iseult, as a PP suggested
