I was researching the tragedies of the German House of Hesse-Darmstadt (Hesse and by Rhine), in particular the death as a toddler of Princess Johanna of Hesse and by Rhine.

Johanna as a name suits a Princess, even though it was a title in pretense as she was born 18 years after the Grand Duchy she would have been a princess and grand ducal highness of had been abolished.

Joanna/ Johanna is a great name and due a revival!

I went to school with a Johanna, pronounced the German way with a Y sound rather than a hard J. It was a total pain for her to keep correcting every. single. time. a new teacher read it off the register. She kind of gave up in the end.

I also know a Johanna who uses the hard J, but is NN Hannie, which is quite sweet.

It's a nice name but the pronunciation can be an issue.

I really like Johanna / Joanna and agree with a PP it's due a revival

Gorgeous. I knew one who was a Jojo

DramaAlpaca · 08/08/2018 15:40

It's a beautiful name.

I know a couple of Johannas in Ireland, both pronounce it as it's written - Jo-HAN-ah.

I slightly prefer it to Joanna, actually.

This is my birth name so obviously love it! Have had so many nicknames though - Jo (at work), Jojo (when I was younger), Jossen (Swedish nickname) and Josephine. I do find that people struggle with the pronounciation here in the UK so I often shorten it to Jo. In Sweden where I’m from it’s a common name. Similar versions are Joanna, Joanne, Hannah, Anna.

LoveInTokyo · 08/08/2018 17:54

I really like it too, but prefer the Joanna spelling.

She looks a little sweetheart, bless.
Joanna/Johanna is a lovely name !
