The only one I don't like is Alma and for the same reason that you have doubts - a local pub.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 07/08/2018 22:54

A nickname for Isaac is Zac.

TatianaLarina · 07/08/2018 23:06

Like Cassandra, Margot, Aurelia and Mariella, Helena and Marianne too.
I’d ditch the rest.

Like Gabriel, Alexander and Edward.

Gabriels are called Gabe.

ReginaPhalange89 · 07/08/2018 23:06

Most of your names I consider quite old fashioned.... nothing wrong with that, but most of the older boys names also come with the inevitable nicknames. Like Francis - Frank/Frankie, Albert - Albie , Edward - Eddie . Alexander - Alex or Zander. I feel like a lot of kids won't like these
'older' names so they're likely to shorten them , worth thinking about !

Michael is too common to be only associated with Michael Jackson 😂 so I wouldn't worry about that . Asher is ok but it's apparently quite popular the last few years, it's been in the top 10 lists anyway

Of the girls names I like Francesca, Elaina, Alyssa and Evelyn. Some of the others are a bit too old for my taste (Martha, Frances and Irene for sure too old for me , sorry)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/08/2018 09:54

From your girls list, I like Frances, Helena, Juliet and Alyssa.
Boys names, I'd choose Francis.

MorrisDancingViv · 08/08/2018 10:39

I don't like any of your boys names but I love

Aurelia
Marianne
Francesca
Juliet
Mariella

bridgetreilly · 08/08/2018 10:50

Frances: it's okay but I prefer Francesca
Irene (pronounced eye-reen): old-fashioned and not in the good way
Helena: Helen-a or He-leen-a?
Genevieve: Hate this
Evangeline: Lovely, esp nn Evie.
Juliet: Excellent name
Marianne: the wet, drippy one in Sense and Sensibility. I wouldn't.
Francesca: see above
Grace: Blah, blah, blah
Cassandra: DOOM, DOOM, WE'RE ALL DOOMED. Also, Only Fools and Horses
Vivienne: It's okay
Elaina: No. Either Elaine or Elena.
Julia: It's okay
Margot: This is lovely
Alyssa: Not a fan
Evelyn: Cute
Georgia: Whatever
Martha: It's a very home-body sort of name.
Alexandria: sounds pretentious even if you picked it for pronunciation issues
Aurelia: also pretentious
Alma: no, and not just because of the pub
Mariella: after Mariella Frostrup? I wouldn't.

BOYS
Francis: nope
Albert: nn Bertie. Lovely
Michael: Michael Jackson was totally a perv.
Alfred: nn Freddy. Fine.
Asher: nope
Isaac: Love this. nn Zac.
Heath: nope.
Gabriel: no, he wouldn't get called gay. I mean, he might, like any kid might, but not because of his name.
Alexander: sure, why not?
Edward: well then, call him Ted when he's little, and Edward as an adult.

Frances- never met one under the age of 65
Irene-never met one under the age of 85 Grin
Helena- I like it
Genevieve- can’t think of a major con but not a fan
Evangeline- beautiful name but would no doubt be shortened to Eva which is very common atm.
Juliet- like it. Obvious link to Romeo and Juliet which doesn’t phase me but might bug her at GCSE age.
Marianne- lovely
Francesca- went to school with one and everyone called her Fanny.
Grace- too common
Cassandra -only fools and horses
Vivienne- would possibly be shortened to Viv which makes me think of a grumpy middle aged woman
Elaina- would have to spell it out a lot to people and may be shortened to Elle.
Julia- not a fan
Margot- beautiful, one of my favourites.
Alyssa- common
Evelyn-common
Georgia-only Georgia/Georgina’s I’ve ever known have been truly wretched people.
Martha- another of my favourites
Alexandria- may get Andrea which is grim but most likely would be Alex
Aurelia- orally. Sounds awful in most British accents if you are UK based
Alma- only ever known dogs called this
Mariella- beautiful

BOYS

-Francis- again, never met one under about 65. Usually gets shortened to Frank.

-Albert. I don’t mind this and I know it has a recent resurgence but it really is an old man’s name. Not a cool old man’s name either, just a straight up pensioners name Grin. Reminds me of only fools and horses again too.

-Michael. Don’t mind it, not many around things these days either.

-Alfred. Alfie is definitely inevitable and I agree, not a favourite.

-Asher- no. I can’t really say anything other than ‘no’.

-Isaac, can be shortened to Zac. Don’t mind it, makes me think of Sir Isaac Newton.

-Heath. Ledger? Besides, it should be Heathcliff and that is an awful piece of literature.

-Gabriel. Would possibly get the piss taken in secondary school but unsure. The ones I have met shorten it to Gabe.

-Alexander- like it but would almost definitely be Alex.

-Edward- my favourite, we have chosen this. Ted/Teddy/Bear when he’s young then just Ed or Edward when he’s older.

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/08/2018 14:26

Frances - it sounds so stiff on a girl if you know what i mean
Irene - it's different but not really getting the retro-chic feel i get off other older names. Maybe your just ahead of the trend? Maybe you'd like Eileen? It has a slighter younger feel to me

Helena - pretty with either pronunciation
Genevieve - I like it nn Ginny. Not so keen on Genna / Genny. Evie maybe?
Evangeline - pretty but quite a heavy name to have
Juliet - not a fan
Marianne - lovely name
Francesca - really like it like Cesca. Dislike Frankie
Grace - nice enough
Cassandra - not a fan
Vivienne - I like it, it has Sass
Elaina - not a fan
Julia - not a fan
Margot - really like it
Alyssa - nice
Evelyn - like alot but it's very popular
Georgia - nice
Martha - ok
Alexandria (Alexandra doesn't fit with our surname beginning with R) - not a fan. I like Alessandra
Aurelia - no
Alma - I like. A pub wouldn't put me off unless it was infamous locally for dogging or something

Mariella - ok but i think Marianne is much nicer

-Francis - love

-Albert - i think this would be ok if you d using a nickname that uncle isn't known by

-Michael - not a fan. I prefer Micah

-Alfred - I think Alfie would be people's go to nickname

-Asher - it's ok. A bit meh

-Isaac - can be shortened to Ike or Zac

-Heath - cliff and Cathy

-Gabriel - I like it but like you worry it would be hard to pull off as a teenager

-Alexander - it's ok just everywhere
Edward - I also really like Edward nn Ted but wouldn't use it as I hate Eddie. Though Ed isn't so bad

Greeneyedgeek83 · 08/08/2018 14:26

Or what about

Niamh

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/08/2018 18:45

Orla is lovely, and Susannah (Susie is cute).
I still like Francis for a boy, but Robert and Oliver are both nice.

RoseMartha · 08/08/2018 21:01

Susannah can be shortened to Susie or Anna

Caleb not sure what ti shorten ti other than Cal

PennyGH · 08/08/2018 21:45

All good names but I really love Margot and Alexander

LlamaPyjamas · 08/08/2018 21:57

We had a Margot at school who always got called Maggot. Martha is what the maid is usually called in Victorian novels. I like Alexander and Aurelia. Your list of names also made me think of Madeleine which is lovely.

Greeneyedgeek83 · 08/08/2018 22:06

I love Madeleine but I always think McCann whenever I see the name.

Frances - Fanny, Bacon, Fran. I like Frances
Irene (pronounced eye-reen) - Prefer I-reen-ee
Helena - like it a lot
Genevieve - Not keen.
Evangeline - Don't like it. Eve/Eva/Evie etc. It's less horrible than Aveline.
Juliet - ok, but I wouldn't choose it. Don't like Jools or Julie-ETTE.
Marianne - ok but I wouldn't choose it
Francesca - ok not keen on Chessie or Frankie
Grace - lovely but too popular
Cassandra - no. Cassie's a bit barmaidy
Vivienne - ok but I wouldn't choose it. Viv?
Elaina - nice
Julia - ok but I wouldn't choose it. Don't like Jules.
Margot - ok
Alyssa - nice
Evelyn - no. don't like it. Too popular and not pretty or anything.
Georgia - yes. Also like Georgina
Martha - ok
Alexandria (Alexandra doesn't fit with our surname beginning with R) - no. Alexandria is too long. How about Leopoldina?
Aurelia - too frilly
Alma (we have a pub close by with this name in it so unsure) - nice but I too live near a pub called it.
Mariella - nice

BOYS
Francis - Fran, Bacon, Frank. Frank is OK
Albert (I have a living uncle with this name, I love him but I genuinely like the name and would hope it wouldn't be assumed it was purely based on him lol) - don't like Albie or Bertie so a no
Michael (I sometimes worry I will think of michael jackson and I'm still not sure if he was a perv?) - like it a lot but can't stand any MJ songs
Alfred (is alfie inevitable? I am not keen and prefer Alf or fred) - Don't like Alfred, Fred, Alf or Alfie
Asher - no
Isaac (I like names you can shorten and I don't know a nickname for this?) - Ike. Too biblical for me but otherwise OK
Heath - Ted. How about Thatcher or Major instead? Actually it's a name that looks nice, but a bit too much like Keith?
Gabriel - (would he get called gay at school?) - Gay, Gabe. Too frilly
Alexander - classic
Edward (Like Ted for a little boy but not an older person and hate eddie?) - I liked Teddy when it was just Mr Sheringham but now little Teds are everywhere I'm too scared to go down to the woods

Harebellmeadow · 08/08/2018 22:38

Genevieve could be confusing as to whether you use the English or French pronunciation, ie Jenni-veev or Shaun-vie-éve. Worked in the city and had lots of French Shaun-viévs as colleagues, always lovely though

peoplearemean · 08/08/2018 22:39

Your girls names all seem of a certain theme and are lovely. I particularly love Genevieve and think it is really under used. Also love Aurelia - Love Actually!

Your boys names seem quite random. I think Michael is quite classic but seems quite different to your girls names. Gabriel - all I can think of is Gabriel on The Bill who was a psychopath (!) sorry.

Boys names more like your girls names I can think of would be Zachary, Nathaniel, Miles, Roman... I don't know but your girls names all seem very sophisticated and somewhat rare these days whereas the boys names seem a bit ordinary in comparison? Sorry if that's not helpful but... Genevieve - yes!

Harebellmeadow · 08/08/2018 22:39

Genvieve (french pron. ) is for me Catherine Denueve in the Umbrellas of Cherbourg (beautiful and eternally chic)
