Callie, or longer version Calliope

Due a little girl in a few months. Since pre-pregnancy DH has always liked Callie, which I am also very fond of! However I think she should have a longer version. Callie would be what we’d use most often but I think having a longer version also is a better idea. I loved Calliope of course I didn’t hear that on Grey’s Anatomy... (pronounced Call-eye-o-p) but DH is not a fan, think it’s ridiculous and thinks just Callie is fine. Is Calliope too out there and should we just stick with Callie?

If it makes any difference I have a reasonably unusual but not ‘weird’ first name, and DH has a top 100 boys name so his is super common Grin

Caroline?

tissuesosoft · 06/08/2018 16:45

Love it! It is top of my list if we had another DC (girl!)

HeyDolly · 06/08/2018 16:46

Love Callie, don’t like Calliope. What about Callista if you want a long name?

PickettBowtruckles · 06/08/2018 16:46

Not a big fan of Caroline, thanks for the suggestion though :)

@tissuesosoft yay! I need more people like you to agree and prove to DH that Calliope is a lovely name :)

I’m with you - Callie is gorgeous. Just suggested Calypso on another thread, and Callista works too.

tissuesosoft · 06/08/2018 16:47

Or Callina, Calista, Callia

shumway · 06/08/2018 16:47

Makes me think of Middlesex.

PickettBowtruckles · 06/08/2018 16:47

We’ve discussed Callista, DH said he likes it more than Calliope but doesn’t love it, and I don’t mind it but don’t love it whereas I really like Calliope so would rather try and persuade him to that Grin

Lovely name - quite posh and erudite but with a cute and down-to-earth abbreviation. Best of both worlds!

PickettBowtruckles · 06/08/2018 16:48

@shumway why Middlesex? Am I missing something 😂

tissuesosoft · 06/08/2018 16:49

Caliana is pretty too

PickettBowtruckles · 06/08/2018 16:49

@sweetcinnabun that’s my feeling - Calliope sounds a bit ‘posher’ or more professional if she wants to use it when she’s older, and Callie is still a cute nickname!

Not heard Caliana before! Definitely going to speak to DH about that one.

A calliope is a steam organ

Callie, or longer version Calliope
tissuesosoft · 06/08/2018 16:52

Caliana is Greek origin and means most beautiful. Could be spelt with two ‘l’s or two ‘n’s

pieceofpurplesky · 06/08/2018 16:52

I love Callie as a name in its own right. As an aside my friend is from Caliope in Australia!

How about Catharine Lilly nn Callie

EsmereldaPepperpot · 06/08/2018 16:53

I like Callia better as a stand alone name. Calliope isn't very nice to my ear and sounds a bit like an ice cream.

Linnet · 06/08/2018 16:54

I love the name Calliope. I also know a Calista who gets called Callie.

AtticaRose · 06/08/2018 16:59

Middlesex is a book, the lead character is Calliope/Callie :-)

ReginaPhalange89 · 06/08/2018 18:59

Sorry, Calliope is awful 🙈 I've never heard it before though, suppose when you associate it with someone it's different. I think Callie on its own is perfectly fine ! Calliope just makes me think cantaloupe or a calipo ice lolly 😂

There are about 4 girls in DS school called Callie and I’m pretty sure that none of them are named ‘longer Names’, they’re all just ‘Callie’.

daisypond · 06/08/2018 19:06

Calliope is a lovely name, but you'll get people not knowing how to pronounce it. If that's the one you love, I think you should go for it. Callista is nice too, though.

Biologifemini · 06/08/2018 19:07

Calliope is lovely (and Greek) in Greece it is sometimes shortened to poppy too.
