Anwen

hungryhippie · 05/08/2018 13:51

Both very cute names. I like them both so cant choose.

DramaAlpaca · 05/08/2018 13:52

Not mad on either, but of the two Anwen.

DunesOfSand · 05/08/2018 13:52

I know a Mabel and an Anwyn.
Both good.

immortalmarble · 05/08/2018 13:52

I think Mabel is lovely. I’m not an enormous fan of Anwen but that’s just my personal taste; there’s certainly nothing ‘wrong’ with it Smile

RavenWings · 05/08/2018 14:24

Anwen is lovely.
Mabel is awful - one of those very unappealing sounding, trendy old lady names.

ReginaPhalange89 · 05/08/2018 14:24

Not keen sorry. Mabel is too old fashioned for my taste , and I've never heard of Anwyn, not keen sorry but that's just my taste

Margaurette · 05/08/2018 14:29

Anwen is gorgeous!

Spam88 · 05/08/2018 14:31

Anwen is one of my favourite welsh names :) not a fan of Mabel though.

SocksRock · 05/08/2018 14:31

My youngest is Anwen, love it :-)

heartofgold · 05/08/2018 14:36

i read a recent post dissing -wen names but i think they're lovely :)

MariaMadita · 05/08/2018 14:48

Anwen is nice.

I personally don't like Mabel (but do like Amabel)...

RestingButchFace · 05/08/2018 14:50

Mabel out of those 2, if you like Welsh names what about Mabli?

Maireadd · 05/08/2018 17:19

Anwen

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/08/2018 17:25

Anwen.

Saucery · 05/08/2018 17:29

Anwen, although I do like Mabel too.

bridgetreilly · 05/08/2018 17:49

I like both. If you're Welsh, I'd pick Anwen; if not, Mabel.

MikeUniformMike · 05/08/2018 18:34

Anwyn isn't right. Anwen is popular with Welsh people who don't speak welsh. A bit grannyish if you speak welsh and could be shhortened to Ann or Annie.
Mabel is also a bit grannyish. Mabli (pron Mabbly) is the welsh form of Mabel and is currently popular.
I'd go for Mabli or Mabel.

AnyaMoondial · 05/08/2018 20:07

Mabel

vampirethriller · 06/08/2018 12:16

Anwen is nice. It's my cousins name and gets shortened to Annie. Don't like Mabel sorry!

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/08/2018 12:51

Love both though slightly prefer Mabel. I like that Anwen can be shortened to Annie though

Rufffles · 06/08/2018 12:58

I like how Anwen sounds, but I'd be put off by the fact that she'd be forever spelling it out to people. Already in this thread there's confusion as to whether it's Anwen or Anwyn. I love my first name, but unfortunately it also falls into that same category, and I've always found that irritating.

SocksRock · 06/08/2018 13:13

My Anwen refuses to answer to Annie :-) And DH/his family are all Welsh speakers and love it. I have an Eira as well, which apparently is a bit old fashioned...

Raines100 · 06/08/2018 13:40

Anwen is lovely. Think it's pretty well known in the UK outside of Wales, so don't foresee much confusion.

Mabel is an old woman or the dog from Blue Peter (guess my age anyone?).

MikeUniformMike · 06/08/2018 19:27

The -wyn or -wen ending indicates whether it is a boy's name or a girl's name.
Olwyn, Anwyn and Bronwyn might be used occasionally but they're misspellings.
Many names have a male and female version - Cledwyn (man), Cledwen (woman), Elwyn (man), Elwen (woman - sorry Mr & Mrs Cameron), Gwyn (man), Gwen (woman) etc.
Wen is often added to another word to make it more feminine so you would get Aledwen (Aled+wen) to make it a girl's name)
A bit like -ine, -ia or -a added to a boy's name (Gerald, Victor, Louis, Robert etc).

The -wyn and -wen naming was very fashionable around 1930s so they seem a bit dated. Anwen is currently popular in Wales, mainly outside the welsh-speaking community. It's sort of equivalent to Anita or Annette.
