Spent ages thinking of a name we both love and low & behold my work friend has just used it on her new puppy!!

The only saving grace is that she's left work so chances are we will just be Facebook friends from now on as we live quite a distance from each other etc.

But it has put me off using the name now.

So we feel we are back to square one. We like names ending in y and not too popular.

My cousin had a dog called X name. Then had a son and named him the exact same name!

AudreyBillingham · 05/08/2018 16:36

DP was named after his grandparents' dog..

polkadotpixie · 05/08/2018 16:38

I'm strongly considering giving my baby our dog's name as his middle name 😂

I really like the name and the dog came with it (he's a rescue) otherwise I'd give it as his first name

ReckItWralf · 05/08/2018 16:40

My nephew and my dog have nearly the same name, it’s fine. Eg. Arnie and Barney.
My Dad calls them each the wrong name but everyone else manages.
If I had known the name was on their potential baby name list I wouldn’t have chosen it but they never said Grin

GetAwayFromHer · 05/08/2018 16:47

Is it Jasper?

If so, best left to the dog

If it's Michael - tell her she's being a bit trendy

Stillmonday · 05/08/2018 16:52

The name is Barnaby. So it's a bit unusual which is why I think people might make the comparison. If it was something like Michael then I wouldn't think twice.

Depends on the name but I'd not think twice to be honest (unless it's Mungo or Fred Bassett etc ... then rethink 💭

flumpybear · 05/08/2018 16:54

Aaahhh barnaby is quite sweet Wink

GetAwayFromHer · 05/08/2018 16:56

I am sorry. I think Barnaby is a bit Jasper. Suits a dog or small child but not a teen/adult

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 05/08/2018 17:02

I shared a name with my mums friends dog, she was named before I was, who cares, I’ve out lived the dog by about 35 years and only your post has reminded me. I doesn’t matter

iamthere123 · 05/08/2018 17:07

OMG I love the name Barnaby!! Also Indiana Jones named himself after the dog and it didn’t do him any harm - he defeated Nazis!

Stillmonday · 05/08/2018 17:10

@GetAwayFromHer It doesn't bother me if people don't like the name. I never wanted to go for a 'run of the mill' name anyway.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I think I'm going to use it after all :)

Barnaby's not to my taste but I wouldn't say it was a dog's name. I thought you were going to say Rex.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/08/2018 17:20

OP, use the name, she'll probably end up calling him Barney anyway.
Many dogs have human names these days, use your chosen name.

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 05/08/2018 17:26

I have a DS now age 20 called Barnaby nnBarney. It is a cracking name for a child, teen and adult. He loves it and so do we. It is also a cracking name for a dog. Many a time we have been walking, or sitting on the beach and had DS Barney playing with a DDog Barney we have bumped into.

BadgerFace · 05/08/2018 17:27

I was 6 months pregnant when I met our neighbour having recently moved. Her dog’s name was the one we’d chosen for DD2... Still used it though! Barnaby is very sweet, don’t let this put you off.

Singlenotsingle · 05/08/2018 17:28

I know dogs called Derek and Frank. My own dogs called Sophie.

@MikeUniformMike

“Get a dog and name it after her”

Best comment ever, I totally agree with that level of sass!

millymae · 05/08/2018 17:34

It’s annoying OP, but I wouldn’t let it stop me using the name.
If it’s any consolation we were out not so long ago and came across a dog with the same name as my daughter. She loved it and was telling everyone for days after that she’d met a dog that had the same name as her.
I know it’s not quite the same as a friend using the name you’ve chosen for her pet, but as sugar says above, many dogs have human names nowadays. I wouldn’t let it put me off.

shoelaces · 05/08/2018 17:38

My mum gave her dog the same name as my DS. Years after DS was born! 🤦‍♀️

MikeUniformMike · 05/08/2018 17:43

Thank you Angharad07!
Of course any pet would do. Snake, gerbil, donkey...
I like Barnaby but it's a bit of a name that is cute on a youngster.

Sessy19 · 05/08/2018 19:04

When I was born, my middle name was undecided. The neighbour used to call her cat in every night, so my dad presented that name before they left for the registrar...and it was bestowed upon me. I’m fond of it. And of the story!

MikeUniformMike · 05/08/2018 19:08

What was the cat's name. Was it Pussy?

DowntownDallas · 05/08/2018 19:16

My new puppy has the same name as 2 f my nephews. I didn’t actual realise until MIL mentioned it, neither is offended. He is a rescue and we wanted a new name with the same sound as his (female) old one.
