Alasdair?

This is the only name we can both agree on equally for a boy. We’re unsure which spelling to use but leaning to Alasdair.

What are people’s thoughts?

Lovely name
With spelling, I think it depends where you are - Alistair is more common in England with Alasdair more Scottish

Fabricwitch · 04/08/2018 11:32

Lovely name and prefer Alasdair but either spelling works!

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 11:32

We’re in England. I know whichever way we choose, he will have to spell it as there are various spellings. DS1 has a name like that and always has to spell it even though it’s a known name due to there being multiple spellings. It doesn’t bother us but we’d like to make it as easy as possible for him!

I would go with Alistair. Nice name. Will get called Al.

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 11:43

One of the reasons we like it is because we think Al is acceptable nickname. We’ve had real problems with names we like but hate the shortening of (we like Nicholas but not nick, Charles but not Charlie etc)

Nice name. I think Alistair will be the more usual spelling that people will tend to go for in England, but Alasdair is fine. I know quite a few Alistairs/Alasdairs and some are shortened to Ali as well as Al.

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 12:04

Alistair does seem to be more popular so we might go for that spelling!

It's a great name and good with either spelling, chose the one you want.

FairfaxAikman · 04/08/2018 12:10

Alasdair was my first choice for DS but DH vetoed it. As it's a Gaelic name, Alasdair is the correct spelling.

Ginandplatonic · 04/08/2018 12:17

I have one with your preferred spelling. We are in Oz and it's a bit of a pain for him as no one gets the spelling right. DH (Scottish) insisted on that spelling and I gave in. I would have preferred Alistair.

Great name though however you spell it. I still love it 18 years later.

He doesn't get called Al btw. I call him Ali but no one else does, he just gets Alasdair.

AtticaRose · 04/08/2018 12:43

I personally like the d spelling (no idea why!), but both are great names.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 04/08/2018 12:44

It was on our short list spelled Alastair. Lovely name!

MrSpock · 04/08/2018 12:55

Glad everyone likes it! :)

Our only problem now is if DT2 turns out to be another boy. So far they think she is a girl but she didn’t give them a good enough look to be sure. This is the only boys name we agree on!

Love it too but I'd go Alastair

Sophronia · 04/08/2018 16:04

I prefer the Alastair spelling.

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2018 16:06

I like it spelled any old way Grin

weebarra · 04/08/2018 16:12

I've got one spelled with a D. We are in Scotland and people are aware of the various spellings and ask. He gets Al, but likes his "big name" too.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/08/2018 16:43

We went with Alastair (middle name) even though we are in Scotland. We have an Alister in the family too which I quite like for the simplicity.

Flashinggreen · 04/08/2018 16:49

We spell it Alistair, didn’t realise just how many spellings there were!

loveablether · 04/08/2018 16:58

Alasdair may be called Addy for short - great name!

Movablefeast · 04/08/2018 16:58

My cousin has this name (and I'm still not sure how he spells it) but his name is almost always shortened to Ali and Al. He is a big wig in management consulting but still finds his name shortened.

Thistles24 · 04/08/2018 17:53

Love it! Especially spelt Alasdair Smile

CakeRattleandRoll · 05/08/2018 06:35

Love it. Prefer Alasdair spelling.

RedDwarves · 05/08/2018 07:44

Love it. I would probably spell it Alastair, but like Alasdair too. I'm not as keen on Alistair.

MrSpock · 05/08/2018 07:51

I’m glad everyone loves the name! DP and I think we’ve narrowed it down to Alasdair or Alastair.
