Husband and I really struggled from the offset to choose a name for a boy. We hoped to have a group of names for boys and a group for girls. That way we could hopefully choose one when we see their little face for the first time. We found out it was a boy many months ago and have REALLY struggled to find names we both like.

We wanted a name that wasn’t common but not too bizarre. We really like ‘Lochlan’ but made the mistake of suggesting it to people. I am Scottish and H is English. H really liked the idea of Scottish/Celtic or even Scandinavian names. We thought this was a good compromise...but not sure if the mixed reaction is a sign to choose something else!

Thoughts!?!

Thank you in advance Smile

I prefer Lachlan as well.

ladycarlotta · 03/08/2018 16:35

Lochlan is lovely. I know one little Lochlan (spelt that way too). If you both like the name, use it, and screw what other people think.

LittleDoritt · 03/08/2018 16:41

I love Lochlan.

booniloo · 03/08/2018 16:45

Both are nice but to be honest if you're living in England then it would really bother me that the -ch wasn't pronounced properly and was said more like -ck which I don't think sounds right at all.

Veterinari · 03/08/2018 16:52

Prefer Lachlan
What are your husband’s suggestions? Just saying ‘no’ isn’t hugely helpful....

Danielle1311 · 03/08/2018 16:59

Haha! I know! He’s a great husband but can be incredibly unhelpful in these situations! Reminds me of wedding planning all over again... complaints but no suggestions for improvement!

He has no other ideas at all. He thought he liked ‘Luke’ but that lasted all of a week!

I definitely prefer the spelling Lachlan & it’s not completely unknown in England. Lochlan feels wrong to the English ear/spelling

Duncan would work well
Leyton
Cameron
Fraser
Harrison
Iain

Gus?

bridgetreilly · 03/08/2018 18:42

Not sure you’ve noticed but 2018 seems to be the year of baby boys galore!! So lots of names have been used - like Caleb etc

I have literally no idea what this means. Names get used but they don't get used up. You can still use them!

bridgetreilly · 03/08/2018 18:43

I have only ever seen Lachlan and would have assumed Lochlan was a spelling mistake.

Danielle1311 · 03/08/2018 19:00

What you’ve said is absolutely true but we’ve many friends who’ve had boys this year and lots of names are already used often/become more popular.

We’re just being fussy I suppose!

Seamus?

Gorgeous name and woefully underused IMO. I have a Ruairidh, and Seamus was next in the list if I'd had another boy.

Mousefunky · 04/08/2018 10:51

I know a Lachlan and I love the name but he has mentioned how he’s spent his life telling people how it’s pronounced. I prefer that spelling to Lochlan.

Murray is nice.

MikeUniformMike · 04/08/2018 10:55

Donald

I like it a lot it ticks mine and dh's requirements when we were looking (what I call unusual but not weird names) People will get used to it. the lukewarm is because many people really prefer the "norm" in names just look at when people post a list of names and there is 3 or 4 top 20 names and 3-4 unusual ones the unusual ones gets the thumbs down more than the popular ones.

When we had ds 16 years ago it was a real marmite reaction. Dmum actually said " thats HORRIBLE" (ds is Conrad) FFW 11 years she was visiting and said" I always liked the name Conrad its such a good solid strong name.. She had got used to the name and it now represented her grandson who she loved.

People will get used to your sons name too and will love him and then the name will grow on them.

RavenWings · 04/08/2018 11:24

Lochlan is great, though I agree that Lachlan is much nicer.

Rarfy · 04/08/2018 11:29

Lovely name but prefer it Lachlan.

2chins · 04/08/2018 11:38

Lochlan is lovely! And I love love the nickname Lockie. Wish my DH would go for it...

MrsT4 · 04/08/2018 11:41

MrsT4 · 04/08/2018 11:42

Oh yes to ruaridh

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 04/08/2018 11:47

As a fellow Scot, I've met a few Lachlans, but never a Lochlan.

How about Fraser, Duncan, Ross or Sandy (for Alexander)?

Zebrasinpyjamas · 04/08/2018 11:49

Rory? I know it's not spelt the Scottish traditional way but would be more recognisable in England. It's not overly common.

Lalaisloopsy · 04/08/2018 11:54

Caius or Kai?

Flywheel · 04/08/2018 18:21

I think Lochlan is really lovely. If you're open to Irish names how about Conal or Cillian (or Killian if you're in England may be easier)

NanooCov · 04/08/2018 22:59

Hector?
