Question about Geraint

One for the Welsh MNetters...

Geraint: when was it most popular and how does it come across now? Dated/vintage/quirky, etc.

Thanks!

Tour de France winner this year, so more widely known/popular than before..

Only other one I know (not in Wales) is a retired head teacher, approx 70 now.

Know one, about 45ish. Goes by the nickname Reg.

BestIsWest · 01/08/2018 20:15

Know an 18 year old who is lovely. I know several in their twenties, thirties and forties and a seventy year old one. I think it’s works across all ages. I like it.

Llareggub · 01/08/2018 20:19

I have always known many geraints of all ages.

Frazzled2207 · 01/08/2018 20:21

I don't think it sounds dated.
I'd tread carefully though, English people just can't say it right. Emphasis is on the first not second syllable.

sagasleathertrousers · 01/08/2018 22:07

I'm not Welsh but for what it's worth I really like it.

2ManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 01/08/2018 22:14

It drives me mad when it is incorrectly pronounced. Most English people seem to pronounce it Ger-ant, if you live in England be prepared to correct people a lot!

JustlikeDevon · 01/08/2018 22:18

I consider it of my age range (40s). Never met an attractive one.

YourVagesty · 01/08/2018 22:21

I know loads across all age ranges.

The pronunciation thing is something to be considered. English people tend to say something like Gur-raint, emphasis on second syllable. Welsh people say Gairr (to rhyme with hair) raint. Emphasis on first syllable.

Mamimawr · 01/08/2018 22:25

I know a few between 20 and 45 years old. No reason not to use it. Good strong Welsh name.

PlatypusPie · 01/08/2018 22:30

Welsh descent with lots of Geraints for generations going back - have always been very fond of it, but it hasn’t been in the current swathe of cousins. Hope it is having a revival .m

KiplingAngelCake · 02/08/2018 11:15

I know a few across all ages. Great name.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2018 12:43

It's the name of someone in the 50-70 age group.
It's from Arthurian Legends, Gerontius.
it's GER-aint. The Ger bit is like the Gerr in Gerroff!, and the aint rhymes with pint.
It's a nice enough name. Naming a child after a sportstar or celebrity is a bit naff.

AlliKaneErikson · 03/08/2018 20:02

Not necessarily in their 50s-70s; I know lots of Geraints. The oldest is about 40 and he rest between there and 20 ish. There were lots in school when I was there (40 and younger now).

confusedandemployed · 03/08/2018 20:05

I'm 45 and went to a Welsh school, there were literally about 2 or 3 in every class at that time. Still a fair few about around here.

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 03/08/2018 20:10

I lived on the welsh borders and new lots of Geraints ... we knew them all as Gez
