*aaah, posted too soon.

I've liked it ever since I had a lovely Russian literature professor at uni with the name. Dh likes it too.

Would it be weird though, in a 100% British/Irish family with no Eastern European links whatsoever?

Really? Sorry I think it's harsh sounding.

Finfintytint · 31/07/2018 14:02

Reminds me of Guinea Pigs. Smile

GravyMilkshake · 31/07/2018 14:08

It’s an ugly sound. Like someone vomiting.

Cherubfish · 31/07/2018 14:08

I like it Smile

AdultHumanFemale · 31/07/2018 14:12

I think it is nice, and believe that when pronounced 'correctly' , the 'g' sound is softer, a bit like a 'y'.

kenandbarbie · 31/07/2018 14:14

I do think it's a bit weird if you've no heritage outside Uk/Ireland

pennycarbonara · 31/07/2018 14:15

I like it though it seems a bit random if no Slavic heritage.

It's the sort of name where it would seem absolutely fine arriving in the country with it as an adult. But it might be a slightly annoying name for a kid to have for a few years at primary school, because of Olga Da Polga, if they still read that. Not sure how long it would take for kids to put it out of mind - it wasn't one people reminisced about much IME - but could be different if they knew an Olga. It's not the worst thing a kid could get a nickname from. A relatively robust kid with a sense of humour and good social skills probably wouldn't care but a very senstitive easily embarrassed child might find it a burden.

Maybe use it as a middle name instead?

Firsttimemum892 · 31/07/2018 14:16

Noooooooo don’t do it

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 31/07/2018 14:20

It was on our list as dh's Grandmother was called Olga but I liked it more than him and we ended up naming dd after Olga's sister instead.

missmouse101 · 31/07/2018 14:21

Very harsh and ugly sound to me I'm sorry to say!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/07/2018 14:59

Thumbs down from me im afraid. Most granny type names are hype and chic but Olga is dreadful.
However as I often say. Opinions are one thing facts are another.

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2018 15:07

I think it is ok and a bit different. Your baby.
Anyone over 50 will associate it with a gymnast frrom the 1972 Olympics.

LeeMiller · 31/07/2018 16:12

I'd think it was a bit strange if you have no Slavic roots or links, though better if it's after a specific person. I don't find it a particularly attractive sound, it's quite harsh.

RavenWings · 31/07/2018 16:14

To me it's similar to those granny chic names like Enid, Maud, Agnes etc. I don't like it at all but I don't think it's a completely weird choice.

RavenWings · 31/07/2018 16:17

Having said that I like that it's got some strength to it. Olga is a lot better than a lot of the weak, frilly girls names that are currently popular.

LucyFox · 31/07/2018 16:24

I think it depends on the surname ... I like Olga but it won’t work for everyone ...
Olga Parker - ok
Olga Macdonald - weird
Olga Oldfield - no!
Olga Brown - nice - very common surname + unusual first is great!

AtticaRose · 31/07/2018 16:33

Doesn't have to be Slavic - I know a lovely Italian Olga. She's great, and the name has grown on me hugely since meeting her.

It's a little unusual, but I say go for it!

brizzledrizzle · 31/07/2018 16:35

I love it.

Ellieboolou27 · 31/07/2018 16:36

Olga sounds vulgar Grin sorry it’s a no from me

haribosmarties · 31/07/2018 16:36

I absolutely love it!
Have a good friend called Olga which may have made me biased.

Pingipinguin · 31/07/2018 16:41

Go for what you love OP.
Olga may not be to some people's taste but all names get stick on this site and in the real world!
If you call a child something in the top 20, people might say it's boring or common.
If you go for something more unusual like Olga, people will say it's too unusual!
The best thing you can do is go with what you love because no matter what name you choose, people will speak negatively.
Children grow into their names and often other people who know the child can't imagine them being called anything else once they've gotten used to the name! Even if they started off disliking it!
So definitely go with what you love because you'll regret not using the name you love for YOUR baby.

bigknickersbigknockers · 31/07/2018 16:45

Love it. There is an Agatha (Aggie) and an Edith in the school I work at, sadly no Olga yet

Knittedfairies · 31/07/2018 16:48

You love the name and your husband likes it. Job done!

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 31/07/2018 16:50

No, sounds harsh.
