If we ever have another child and it's a boy I love both of these names. Which do you prefer?

Is the first a name? Would have a clue how to pronounce it so Lachlan I suppose but far from a favourite sorry.

HeyDolly · 31/07/2018 07:08

I prefer it spelt Ruari.

Lachlan is OK though where I’m from it tends to be pronounced ‘lock’ rather than ‘lach’ There’s much nicer names imo.

Veterinari · 31/07/2018 07:22

Both lovely but the majority of people will pronounce them Rory and Locklan Angry
Unless you’re In Scotland?

Meandyoumake2 · 31/07/2018 07:36

Love ruaridh - it's one of my top names too ❤️

caoraich · 31/07/2018 07:41

Ruaridh - was one of our top names if we weren't having a girl!

DaniCam89 · 31/07/2018 10:39

I'm guessing you are in Scotland and they will be pronounced properly.. If so Ruaridh. X

Aprilshowersinjuly · 31/07/2018 10:43

Def not Lachlan, he is a psycho is Emmerdale!!
Prefer Ruiry.

Glumglowworm · 31/07/2018 10:45

I love Ruaridh

ForgivenessIsDivine · 31/07/2018 10:49

I know spellingshe vary but the Irish name is Ruairidh. .

florascotia2 · 31/07/2018 10:56

Forgiveness - i was just going to say the same about the Scottish spelling (if it is to follow Gaelic spelling rules, that is, although some people choose to ignore these). Just as you say, there should be an 'i' on both sides of the 'r'.

redmini4 · 31/07/2018 12:36

Lachlan. Ruairdh is fine but there are so many nowadays and with different spellings, I would go Lachlan if you want him not to be one of many.

This thread made me smile as I have a friend who has two boys and they are Ruaridh and Lachlan. I prefer Ruaridh, I think it has a lovely sound. And I wouldn't butcher it and spell it Ruari.

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2018 11:31

Ruairidh. Spelled correctly like that.

Verbena87 · 01/08/2018 11:33

Ruairidh (But I’m English and a teacher, and if I found it in my register I’d say ‘Rory’ Blush - how should it sound?)

PurpleBeachTowel · 01/08/2018 12:52

I meant to write Ruairidh lol. I know how to spell it 😀

doodlejump1980 · 01/08/2018 12:56

Definitely Ruairidh. Pronounced Roo-i (as in igloo)-ray

Verbena87 · 01/08/2018 20:14

Thanks doodlejump - does make a difference to students not having to correct their mispronounced names so I try and make a point of knowing how things ought to sound!

florascotia2 · 01/08/2018 21:08

This may be a regional difference in Scotland, or a difference between Scotland and Ireland, but gaelic-speakers I know would pronounce the end of the word as 'reeh', not 'ray'. Like the speaker in this clip: forvo.com/word/ruairidh/

PurpleBeachTowel · 01/08/2018 22:36

In my Scottish accent it's more roo-ree.

OP posts:
kenandbarbie · 02/08/2018 08:41

Both lovely in Scotland

weebarra · 02/08/2018 08:46

I like them both. I'm Scottish but not a Gaelic speaker and and would pronounce it Roo-ree.
Only thing is that I once worked with a very dyslexic teenager who had big issues spelling his name. Sad

AuntMae · 02/08/2018 12:51

I absolutely love Ruairidh, it was my second choice for my first son. We're in the north east of Scotland and it sounds beautiful with the accent here.

Trialsmum · 02/08/2018 13:02

Ruairidh spunds beautiful in a Scottish accent. I do prefer the spelling Ruairi though.
