A middle name for Eira?

Hi,

We are due dd2 soon, and have chosen the name Eira (it's a Welsh name, pronounced eye-ra). We're struggling to settle on a middle name though. Our thoughts so far are:

Eira Rose
Eira Rosemary
Eira Bethany

Does anyone have thoughts or other suggestions? Thank you Smile

Are you Welsh?

Eira sounds odd if not pronounced properly, with the rolling R.

For that reason, I don't think R middle names go at all and Bethany is very clunky with it.

I'm not a fan of Welsh weather names as, well, they're weather, but what about Eira Haf? If you're going for Snow, you may as well go all out weather forecast!

Mrsbclinton · 22/07/2018 19:43

Lovely name, havent heard it before.
My suggestions
Eira Kate
Eira May
Eira Belle

Lindah1 · 22/07/2018 19:45

Not Bethany but the other 2 are lovely.not a name I've heard before but gorgeous

Needaname2018 · 22/07/2018 19:47

I am Welsh but not welsh speaking.
Dd1 has a Welsh name too. I accept both their names aren't pronounced as nicely as they would be in mid or north Wales, but I still like them :)

Yuk. Sorry. Eira is not pronounced Eye-ra. or Eye-ruh
It nearer Ey-ra.

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 19:53

Eira Haf would be nice if it wasn't a bit bonkers. Snow Summer.

heartofgold · 22/07/2018 19:59

eira gwyn :)

Spam88 · 22/07/2018 20:08

mike it's eye-ra round these parts

ZebraKid71 · 22/07/2018 20:12

I love the first name but dislike Bethany and the names starting in R don't flow well with the -ra ending. Names starting in any other consonant would be fine

Needaname2018 · 22/07/2018 20:18

I've always heard it pronounced Eye-ra where I am. I have read it's more ey-ra in mid and North Wales, so I accept some people may say it differently and she may have to tell them how she likes it pronounced, just like dd1 sometimes has to do.

I see what some of you are saying about the R names not flowing so well.

Dh likes the suggestion of Eira May, but I don't know if that's a bit weird as she'll be born in August. Something to think about!

Tesni. Pronounced Tess-ny

Means warmth, sunshine

Given the weather this year that you have been carrying her - snow and warmth is fitting,

Needaname2018 · 22/07/2018 20:20

Wales online was where we first found it, and they say eye-ra. So hopefully most people round here would pronounce it the way we like it.

Peggy we had wanted a more common or English middle name, as that's what we've done with dd1, but I love the meaning behind what you be suggested because as you say, it's very fitting! Will have a think on that, thank you

I'm in South Wales, Welsh speaking and would alway say Ey-rah. Tbh Eye-rah just sounds wrong to me.
That said it's a lovely name. Eira Wen, Eira Lois (loyss, not lo-iss), Eira Sian, Eira Angharad....

eatyourveg · 22/07/2018 20:32

I would go for Eira Bethan rather than Bethany

ProfessorMoody · 22/07/2018 20:40

I'm West born in South and we say Ey-ra. It's hard to type it phonetically.

Eira Beth?

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 20:51

The Ei bit is like a very quick Ey or Ey ( A bit like the difference between I and Aye) , the r is a clear r and the a is like the a in cat.
It's lovely in welsh.

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 20:51

Ey or Eh.

PeggySchuylar · 22/07/2018 20:55

That sounds like a good plan Need in which case
Beth, Bethan or Bethany would all be nice.

If you like the sound of Bethany and Rosemary what about Felicity or Verity?

Nicpem1982 · 22/07/2018 20:57

Eira jude
Eira beau
Eira wren

ProfessorMoody · 22/07/2018 21:25

Beau is a boy's name Confused

Smoliver · 22/07/2018 21:32

I like Eira. I'd choose Eira Rosemary out of the 3 you've listed.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 22/07/2018 21:36

South Wales Welsh speaking here and I’ve also never heard it eye-rah, I would say ey-ra. Not sure it suits a summer child tbh, although it it is very pretty.

Haf (summer), Enfys (rainbow), Heulwen (sunshine), Siriol (cheery) perhaps?

Coolhotsummer · 22/07/2018 21:40

People saying ey-ra, do you mean ay-ra?

sakura06 · 22/07/2018 21:48

@Coolhotsummer 'Ei-' sounds like the pronunciation of the letter A when saying the alphabet. I think I would write it 'ey' for an English speaker. 'Ay' would be more like the word 'eye'.
