Hermione or Chloe?

We are about to have our third girl and we are running out of names! Our first two all have three names each so we have got through a few. Hermione is top of my list but hubby says too much of an association with Harry Potter, whereas I also like his name of Chloe but we have a one syllable surname so I don't think it's that 'exciting'. Which would you go for? Our other girls have three syllable first names but they don't 'go' together.

Honestly, don't do either. Very dated.

Fabricwitch · 22/07/2018 13:01

Hermione

Smoliver · 22/07/2018 18:03

I love Hermione. I'm surprised it isn't more popular. Yes there's the HP connotation but it's not a bad connotation to have. Hermione Granger is beloved character and one of the smartest witches in the book. What's bad about that?

However, if you're husband really doesn't like Hermione, Chloe is a good alternative.

n0ne · 22/07/2018 18:06

I prefer Hermione. Chloe just doesn't sou d nice to my ears.

Rumpleteezer · 22/07/2018 18:24

Thanks for the views everyone, hubby isn't against Hermione, he thinks it is a beautiful name, he just wonders about shortening it and the HP connotations. But then he doesn't want a name where there may be 2+ of them in a class so I think that kind of rules out Chloe.

Please don't do Hermione. It is a name with an unbreakable link to Harry Potter (now a second generation of fans coming through). Those who don't associate it with Harry Potter will pronounce it Hermy-own. The shortening will probably be Hermy in any case.

Chloe is OK. Any other names on your list?

HumphreyCobblers · 22/07/2018 23:02

I have a Hermione in my family, predating HP. The best thing about the Harry Potter link is that everyone knows how to pronounce it now.

I don't get the angst with the Harry Potter link. No one would ever suggest not calling your DS Harry because of the link.

Unless your surname is Granger OP, I would go for it.

Hermione. It's a great name and Potter means everyone knows how to say it!

RhubarbAndMustard · 22/07/2018 23:06

I love Chloe and actually don't know any. It's simple and classic.

DamnWhyAreAllTheUsernamesTaken · 22/07/2018 23:08

That's a good point Humphrey, there's loads of Harrys and noone ever says ooh no, what about harry potter!

Hermione is my dd's middle name OP and I love it - sometimes am a bit sad its not her first name!

BillywigSting · 23/07/2018 08:36

As much as I love Harry Potter I don't think I could name a daughter hermione.

There's a Harley Quinn in ds's class who's name unfortunately got the odd raised eyebrow or snigger from batman fans.

I would imagine a Hermione getting similar.

Chloe is a really lovely name though

RedDwarves · 23/07/2018 09:21

Probably because Harry is, and always has been, a very popular name. Hermione was effectively unheard of until Harry Potter.

It's like comparing James with Aloysius. One is timeless and ever-present, the other is obscure.

sonnyboo · 23/07/2018 09:25

Hermione is beautiful and classy!

Chloe sounds dated and ugly imo (Klo is toilet in German)!

mostdays · 23/07/2018 09:26

I love the name Chloe

Mum353 · 23/07/2018 12:49

For me Chloe

KiplingAngelCake · 23/07/2018 15:38

Hermione - such a gorgeous name

Pemba · 23/07/2018 18:38

Chloe is pretty, sorry but Hermione is a bit of a mouthful and just isn't.

OrdinaryGirl · 23/07/2018 18:43

Love Hermione! (If you like three syllable names, how about Ginevra? It's Old English for 'fair, white or smooth')

itssquidstella · 23/07/2018 18:43

Hermione

daisypond · 23/07/2018 18:48

I like them both, but I prefer Hermione. I don't associate it with Harry Potter particularly. I always think of the Ancient Greek character. I've known a couple of Hermiones - who must be now in their 60s and 70s, so way before Harry Potter.
