Louis is about to be really, really popular, right?

After Harry and Meghan used it I'm guessing any babies born in the next year will have about three Louis in their class when they hit school, right?

Both me and DH like the name (having a boy), and have a good few nice Irish boys names on there too as I'm Irish. I seem to have a weakness for two-syllable quite vowel-y names, so Louis fits with the rest of the list but I wouldn't want people to assume we're obsessed with the royal family or anything and I also wouldn't want it to be very very popular to the extent there'll be lots of kids named the same in their year, which I suspect it might be.

What do you think, mn?

Harry and Meghan?!?

ellsbells95 · 21/07/2018 21:34

You mean Kate and WilliamHmmGrin

MitchDash · 21/07/2018 21:36

It depends if you want your child to be called Louis P (pandarific) all through school.

Pudding01 · 21/07/2018 21:37

I think it's a nice name and will be probably be popular. So you just need to decide how much it will both you.

And it was William & Kate btw 😜

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/07/2018 21:40

I love Louis, it would be great if it was heard a lot. So so much nicer than Lewis.

sonnyboo · 21/07/2018 21:41

I think the 2 pronunciations (Lou-is vs Lou-ee) will put many off.

pandarific · 21/07/2018 21:42

Oh god, how embarrassing. Yes, those ones, not the other ones! Blush

I like the Lou-ee pronunciation myself, it's cute, and it sounds quite nice with our quote consonant-y surname.

It makes me think of the Jungle book actually! I know a few people who have young boys with that name ( pre royal baby). I personally don’t like it, but did think it was fairly unusual. From now if I heard it I’d assume royalist which is annoying for people who just like it.

SoyDora · 21/07/2018 21:57

It already is isn’t it? I know 5 under 3.

4GreenApples · 21/07/2018 22:09

I think that there’s as many people who’ll be put off by the royal connection as there will be people who’ll call their kid Louis because of Kate & William.

EekThreek · 21/07/2018 22:24

I think it's been popular for a long time tbf. I can think of 8 that I know under the age of 10 off the top of my head.

RedDwarves · 22/07/2018 00:07

It's not popular at the moment in Australia, but George skyrocketed after Prince George was born, so I think Louis will do the same here. Charlotte was in the top 5 here before Princess Charlotte was born.

Rebecca36 · 22/07/2018 01:58

I like the name, Louis and also like Lewis as a first name for a boy (I know one of those).

Louise is nice for a girl.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/07/2018 12:27

Louis is a great name, if you like it, use it.😄

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 14:32

I feel it's a baby's name and not a man's name.
Your baby will only be a baby for a while but a man for a long time.
I think K&W used it to please their family and were a bit limited by what they could choose.

Belindabauer · 22/07/2018 16:35

I don't think it will be that popular. I think old man names such as Albert, Alfred, Frederick, Arthur etc will be very popular as opposed to names like Loius.

SoyDora · 22/07/2018 16:48

It already is popular! All the parents of the ones I know (older than the baby prince) were annoyed that the royals used the name.

userabcname · 22/07/2018 16:57

Yes it is popular already. I have taught many a Louis!

pandarific · 22/07/2018 20:15

@MikeUniformMike curious as to how is it not a man's name? I wouldn't think twice at meeting a grownup Louis - it's a pretty normal (if French) name.

What are names that are 'baby names' but not 'man names'?

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 20:19

I think it's a really nice name, but it seems a name that would be cute on a baby but can't imagine it on a grown man. Maybe it's just me.
It obviously is a man's name because all those french kings had it as their name.

deste · 22/07/2018 23:42

My DF was a Louis and my DD has considered it if she has a boy.

Tarlu · 23/07/2018 17:44

If you're Irish, what about Leo?

That's very classic but I know Leos in their 80s in Ireland! So it is more classic here than in the UK I think. Catholic Classic I guess. (Il Papa)

Also love Rory and if you're able for the spelling Ruaridh is more 'solid' and classic. (to my eyes).
Diarmuid is lovely Irish name but I don't want it to become popular in the UK. I don't think it will though. It's too foreign sounding.
