Alicia/Alyssia

Hi everyone,

Which of the spelling variations would you go for? I really prefer Alice but DH wants something more unusual and his suggested compromise is Alicia/Alyssia. I think I prefer the Alicia spelling but worried it may constantly get pronounced as Alesha.

Alicia, definitely. It's a recognisable spelling and gives a very different impression when written down.

I would pronounce Alicia as Aleesha.

Alyssia is the clearer spelling if you want it pronounced as you do but it doesn’t look very nice

I think Alyssia would ensure it's said properly. But I prefer Alyssa 😊 x

I would pronounce it the Spanish way (except without the accent):

Always have. Wondering if I knew an Alicia when I was a kid or if it was just the character in Mallory Towers. Either way, that was the pronunciation I always heard and use by default.

Dd1 has middle name Alys ( old English / welsh spelling ) is that different enough?

Alicia, 100%. It's the classic and proper spelling. No one I know would pronounce it Aleesha.

Alicia looks far classier and more professional than Alyssia.

Love Alicia. We have one at work, and it's Aliss-ee-ya. Even if people get it wrong once, it's easy to correct.

It's a lovely name but I always though it rhymed with Trisha. I might be in a minority.
Alissya, Aleesha, Alisha, Aleecya...
I'd avoid it.

Alicia is one of those names people say two ways, same as Evelyn.

Who cares? It’s a lovely name. People will only need to be corrected once.

It’s far nicer than Alyssia.

Thanks for all the feedback. Alicia does somehow seem to look nicer than Alyssia to me too, maybe because I originally wanted Alice!

It does seem that there will be some ambiguity with pronounciation, something for DH and I to consider before committing to the name.

I adore Alice and am biased there. We did consider Alicia but it has a totally different feel. I also love Alessandra which could be shortened to Alice.

I like how Alicia looks - but I'd pronounce it as Aleesha unless told otherwise.

Alice is nicer and more classic, especially if in the UK.

I too much prefer Alice, but DH is insistent on a somewhat more unusual name (Alicia is about as close as we have got to meeting in the middle - the rest are a bit too exotic sounding for me to consider!)

My god daughter is Alicia. Never had much of a problem with pronunciation tbh. I do love the name 😀

But I personally prefer Alessia. (I know, it's an entirely different name but it has a similar feel as Alicia imo...)

I have an Alicia, pronounced a-LEE-sia and although I had the same worries about pronunciation, it's been fine. I've only heard Aleesha a couple of times (apart from a couple of infuriating friends who refuse to hear the difference! Angry) and she's nearly 2.

I think because Patricia is pronounced Patrisha people pronounce Alicia as Alisha.

Pronounced Al-liss-ee-a.

It looks much prettier. You'll just need to correct anyone who pronounces it Aleesha, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.
