Alicia/Alyssia

Hi everyone,

Which of the spelling variations would you go for? I really prefer Alice but DH wants something more unusual and his suggested compromise is Alicia/Alyssia. I think I prefer the Alicia spelling but worried it may constantly get pronounced as Alesha.

Thanks

Alicia, definitely. It's a recognisable spelling and gives a very different impression when written down.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/07/2018 20:52

Alicia.

LovelyBranches · 21/07/2018 20:56

I would pronounce Alicia as Aleesha.

Alyssia is the clearer spelling if you want it pronounced as you do but it doesn’t look very nice

Pudding01 · 21/07/2018 21:07

I think Alyssia would ensure it's said properly. But I prefer Alyssa 😊 x

Tefiti2 · 21/07/2018 21:10

Sorry- I would pronounce Alicia as Aleesha, too!

kenandbarbie · 21/07/2018 21:11

Alicia which I would pronounce as Alice iya

That other spelling just looks madey up to me

pennycarbonara · 21/07/2018 21:16

I would pronounce it the Spanish way (except without the accent):

Always have. Wondering if I knew an Alicia when I was a kid or if it was just the character in Mallory Towers. Either way, that was the pronunciation I always heard and use by default.

MoreHairyThanScary · 21/07/2018 23:08

Dd1 has middle name Alys ( old English / welsh spelling ) is that different enough?

OutsideNumber79 · 22/07/2018 08:37

Alicia, 100%. It's the classic and proper spelling. No one I know would pronounce it Aleesha.

Alicia looks far classier and more professional than Alyssia.

AtticaRose · 22/07/2018 08:44

Love Alicia. We have one at work, and it's Aliss-ee-ya. Even if people get it wrong once, it's easy to correct.

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2018 19:56

It's a lovely name but I always though it rhymed with Trisha. I might be in a minority.
Alissya, Aleesha, Alisha, Aleecya...
I'd avoid it.

MsJacksonIfUrNasty · 22/07/2018 19:59

Alicia is one of those names people say two ways, same as Evelyn.

Who cares? It’s a lovely name. People will only need to be corrected once.

It’s far nicer than Alyssia.

AnnaM247 · 22/07/2018 21:12

Thanks for all the feedback. Alicia does somehow seem to look nicer than Alyssia to me too, maybe because I originally wanted Alice!

It does seem that there will be some ambiguity with pronounciation, something for DH and I to consider before committing to the name.

I adore Alice and am biased there. We did consider Alicia but it has a totally different feel. I also love Alessandra which could be shortened to Alice.

daisypond · 23/07/2018 18:12

I like how Alicia looks - but I'd pronounce it as Aleesha unless told otherwise.

sonnyboo · 23/07/2018 18:18

Alice is nicer and more classic, especially if in the UK.

AnnaM247 · 23/07/2018 20:18

I too much prefer Alice, but DH is insistent on a somewhat more unusual name (Alicia is about as close as we have got to meeting in the middle - the rest are a bit too exotic sounding for me to consider!)

Alicia is lovely.

madja · 23/07/2018 20:34

My god daughter is Alicia. Never had much of a problem with pronunciation tbh. I do love the name 😀

cptartapp · 23/07/2018 20:53

Alicia, lovely classy name. Spelt the other way, not so much. Don't try and be 'different'.

MariaMadita · 23/07/2018 21:23

Alicia. :)

But I personally prefer Alessia. (I know, it's an entirely different name but it has a similar feel as Alicia imo...)

PerditaMacleod · 25/07/2018 14:19

I have an Alicia, pronounced a-LEE-sia and although I had the same worries about pronunciation, it's been fine. I've only heard Aleesha a couple of times (apart from a couple of infuriating friends who refuse to hear the difference! Angry) and she's nearly 2.

sonnyboo · 25/07/2018 14:25

I think because Patricia is pronounced Patrisha people pronounce Alicia as Alisha.

jennyfrancis1985 · 25/07/2018 14:26

Alicia - I would pronounce this as a-liss-cia

LoveInTokyo · 26/07/2018 14:03

Alicia.

Pronounced Al-liss-ee-a.

It looks much prettier. You'll just need to correct anyone who pronounces it Aleesha, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.
