No that's not a typo - Devorah is the original biblical spelling! What do you think of it?

I think it's fine if you live in Israel. Otherwise it not only looks and sounds like a mistake she'll be correcting people on for her whole life, it just also sounds weird. Devourer.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 20/07/2018 10:16

I know it isn't made up and it's quite I guess but it looks like one of those yoonique names I'm afraid.

How about Deborah.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 20/07/2018 10:16

Quite nice*

MikeUniformMike · 20/07/2018 10:46

Is it Dev-Or-a or Dev-ra?

Glumglowworm · 20/07/2018 10:46

She’ll spend her life explaining that it’s not a typo

Dljlr · 20/07/2018 10:47

Makes me think of Heavenly Creatures and Kate Winslet enunciating De bor ah with her creepy clay dolls. Not a fan.

manicinsomniac · 20/07/2018 10:57

I like it. I've only ever seen it without the h on the end which I think looks prettier (and less like Deborah). But, if you like the Biblical reference, then I would still with that spelling and go for it.

DPotter · 20/07/2018 11:02

It does look like a typo and you and she will have to explain this for the rest of her life. If you use this spelling have you thought about what you will call her for short? Would it be Devvie, Debbie, Dev, Deb? I quite like Devvie, but then she'll be asked is that short for something and we're back to the typo.
Please don't give her a name that looks like a typo

DaniCam89 · 20/07/2018 15:10

I literally saw Deborah and on re reading it said Deborah again to myself. If you like it then go for it but tbh I think they will be called Deborah accidentally a lot which may grate on you and your child x

LeeMiller · 20/07/2018 15:10

I know a French-Israeli Devora, and think it's prettier without an h on the end.

If you don't have Jewish/Israeli links though it seems a slightly odd choice, and I'd stick with the anglicised form. The 'original' spelling is in Hebrew, Devorah/Devora is just a transcription, so to me it's like naming your child Gavriel or Yakov instead of Gabriel/Jacob.

luckycat007 · 20/07/2018 15:13

It looks and sounds a bit too much like Jehovah I think.

luckycat007 · 20/07/2018 15:13

But it's a nice name 👍🏻

daisypond · 20/07/2018 18:31

I like it. I don't think it looks like a typo at all.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/07/2018 18:33

Everyone will assume it's Deborah. Just call her Deborah...

thestarsatnight · 20/07/2018 18:36

Another one who thinks she will spend her whole life saying, 'No, not Deborah, its DeVorah', with a V. No, I said V for Viking, not B for Bravo.'

KatherinaMinola · 20/07/2018 18:36

I knew that, and I like it.

I like Rivka too.

Maliali · 20/07/2018 18:37

I would think it unusual spelling if you weren’t from a Jewish or Israeli background. All the kids with names like Deborah, Avigail, Yoni, Gavriel/Gavrielle are Jewish. To me it’s a familiar spelling but an unusual/strange choice if there is no link to the Jewish faith .

fieryginger · 20/07/2018 18:39

Not keen. How about Deven or Devon? Not keen on those either, but prefer them to Devorah.

MerryMarigold · 20/07/2018 18:40

I thought it was an interesting spelling of Devereux, to make it more like a first name

DeathByMascara · 20/07/2018 18:40

Her name was Devorah.... Devorah.
It never suited her.

MerryMarigold · 20/07/2018 18:41

Is Yoni a real name not just an MN word?

DumbledoresApprentice · 20/07/2018 18:42

I think it’s beautiful. The biblical Devorah is a good association too. She’s a strong female figure. I would automatically assume a Devorah was Jewish and I think a lot of people would assume the same. I don’t know if you are Jewish and I don’t think it really matters if you aren’t as long as you don’t mind people asking. I’d say go for it.

llangennith · 20/07/2018 18:43

V is pronounced as a B in some other language. Maybe Spanish?
Not that it's relevant...

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 20/07/2018 18:48

I know a few Devorahs and it’s pronounced Duh-vaw-ruh. I like it a lot. Everyone will assume she is Jewish.

Caspiana · 20/07/2018 18:50

Not keen I am afraid. Makes me think of that waspy character from Mortal Kombat
