More like Krystal, Lexi and Demi or not . . .?

Last post for me on names, I promise! Thanks to everyone whose posted on my other thread :). I'm feeling so anxious about getting this wrong for some reason, hopefully it's just hormones . . .

Only name we now have for a girl is Nina, which we both like. The only Nina I know is my DH's 90 year old Indian great aunt! When I posted it recently, one poster said that she grouped it with names like Krystal and Demi. This surprised me I thought it was probably a pretty squarely middle class name and is on the rise in popularity but I don't know any Ninas in the UK or anyone who has named their daughter Nina so I wanted to check.

I hate the "ch" word so I won't use it, but do you see it like "Krystal and Demi" or more like, I don't know, Anna (which would be on my list if it wasn't DH's ex's name!)?

Also I don't mean to offend anyone with a Krystal, Demi or Lexi! One of the loveliest people I know is a Crystal actually.

Nina is in no way like Krystal or Demi in my book. Not 'ch' at all Grin

ParadiseLaundry · 19/07/2018 15:08

Nina's a lovely name and definitely not a 'Ch' name!

IrregularCommentary · 19/07/2018 15:11

Definitely more Anna than Krystal!

rebelrosie12 · 19/07/2018 15:13

I love Nina. The others are totally different. I know a nina who is a beautiful polo player... if that helps

Cliveybaby · 19/07/2018 15:14

I think Nina is lovely :)
Possibly more common in other countries, which might be why you don't see it much here?
I think it's very similar to naomi

ChilliMum · 19/07/2018 15:17

Definitely more Anna. I know 2 Ninas; both in their 30s and both are intelligent, interesting kick ass women.

drinkingteawhenitshot · 19/07/2018 15:18

Thanks everyone! You think you don't care anything about class and then you try to name a baby -- ugh, reveals the worst side of me. :(

It’s a cool name. I know two under 5 near me (east London ) and their parents are trendy, arty people. One has a sister called Rita, the other has siblings called Iris and River.

octoberfarm · 19/07/2018 15:19

Definitely more like Anna by a thousand miles!

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:22

I like it a lot. I know a Nina in her 50s, and the name has always made me think of Nina Simone.
It's easy to spell and say. What's not to like about it.

TatianaLarina · 19/07/2018 15:26

I agree with that poster.

There are a lot of Ninas in London and with a London accent it comes out Ninaaaah.

TatianaLarina · 19/07/2018 15:26

In Italy and Spain it sounds very different.

AgathaTabithaBagatha · 19/07/2018 15:28

I love Nina. I don't know any in RL. For me it's in the same ball park as Stella or Lois, unusual without being weird. I also like that it's not of a particular time such as granny chic names like Ivy or (IMO) a boring classic like Charlotte.

Class-wise, I think your friend has shown that everyone has their own perception of these things, and one man's Persephone is another man's Chardonnay.

drinkingteawhenitshot · 19/07/2018 15:30

Hmm, interesting Tatiana! One thing I like about it is that it works in lots of countries -- but if I try to figure out how it sounds in every country I'll never choose a name. Quite popular in France, Germany and the Netherlands and top ten in Belgium and Austria so I may just have to settle with that being OK!

Nina is definitely a very Anna sort of a name. It's lovely. I've only met one and she was from a very 'naice' family Grin

babyyorkie · 19/07/2018 15:35

Nina is a gorgeous, classy name!

drinkingteawhenitshot · 19/07/2018 16:44

Thanks everyone! Hopefully hormones are not skewing my judgment :).

I think it’s a lovely name. I think it has a continental air.

I definitely wouldn’t put it in the same vein as Krystal.

DBN1 · 19/07/2018 17:02

Nina is lovely. Trust in yourself OP and good luck for the future with your little girl

drinkingteawhenitshot · 19/07/2018 17:14

Thanks DBN1 -- really needed to hear that. I never seem to "trust" myself, and regret everything, but that's probably not an issue for the baby names board! :)

The only Nina I knew was sisters with Bethany and May. 30yrs ago. Nowadays, Bethany may be a ‘ch’ name, but these girls are as prim and proper as they come. School-mistress at a private school. Child psychologist. And solicitor. I’d put them in the non-‘ch’ category! 😊

heateallthebuns · 20/07/2018 20:06

Nothing like crystal or Demi!! I know a few Ninas all middle class horsey / sporty types.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/07/2018 20:11

My friend daughter is a Demi, smart, clever, charismatic wee girl.love the name

plusonefail · 20/07/2018 21:01

I group Nina with Anna etc. It’s a nice name that I am not keen on because to me it sounds a bit insipid (like Alice) but even though I don’t really like it I can still see that it’s a nice name IYSWIM.
