Hi All,
One of our favourites on our shortlist is Aaron, but how do most people pronounce it? We prefer it as 'Arr-on' but I work with an 'Air-on' and not as keen when people say that.

I've known both pronunciations.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/07/2018 18:46

There's nothing stopping you from spelling it Arron or Aron.

DaniCam89 · 17/07/2018 18:47

I'd say Arr-on and have heard a couple Aarons pronounced the same. I'm Scottish if that makes a difference x

Failingat40 · 17/07/2018 19:05

If you prefer the pronunciation 'Arr-on' then you should call him Arron tbh.

Aaron is pronounced as 'Air-on', an entirely different name imo.

Both are fine but he'll have a misspelt name throughout his life no matter which one you pick.

UpDownUpDown · 17/07/2018 19:07

I teach and it's definitely Aa-Ron here (London suburbs)

MrsW85 · 17/07/2018 19:14

I have an arron. Spelt like this as I didn't want anyone thinking it was air-ron.

HJL2506 · 17/07/2018 19:19

I'd pronounce it Arr-on. I prefer it spelt Aaron.

sonnyboo · 17/07/2018 19:28

Why not spell it Arron in that case? That will always be pronounced like you prefer.

daisypond · 17/07/2018 19:51

I'd always pronounce it as Air-on, as my first instinct.

ER1212 · 17/07/2018 19:53

Thanks everyone, I prefer it spelled Aaron tbh but like you say it's going to be said differently throughout his life whichever way we say it! Maybe best to go with one of our other names which don't have this problem.

Isn’t it Ay-Ay-Ron? Wink

IVflytrap · 17/07/2018 20:04

Every Aaron I've known pronounces it Arrun. Air-on sounds like it should be spelt Aeron, or something along those lines.

weeboysmummy · 17/07/2018 20:16

I know an Arran. This spelling seems to be becoming a little more popular. Pronounced as in the island. More likely to be misspelled though.

SpectacularAardvark · 17/07/2018 20:21

I knew an Arran nearly 40 years ago and all the Aarons were pronounced Air-an, I'd be a bit Hmmif I met an Aaron who said he was called Arran. Just my private opinion though.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2018 20:22

There were two Aarons in DS's class, one pronounced AIR-un and the other pronounced ARR-un. To add to the confusion there was also an Arran. The AIR-un pronunciation would be my default unless told otherwise.

Raines100 · 17/07/2018 20:24

Air-on is the original, biblical pronunciation, but in practice, I have only met Arr-ons. Both can be spelt Aaron. It's a fabulous name.

weeboysmummy · 17/07/2018 20:26

I know of two or three spelled Arran, all pre school age. Scottish, so I guess the thinking may be similar to Lewis or Harris, all islands.

Pressuredrip · 17/07/2018 20:26

Air-Ron is the American pronunciation isn't it? I've only ever heard it as a-run in he U.K. I prefer the spelling Aaron too.

ER1212 · 17/07/2018 21:02

I wasn't sure if Air-on was a more modern pronunciation as I'd only heard of Arr-ons before the young un' at work started. It's a great name though.

My ds is Aaron, pronounced the original biblical (correct!) way, Air-on. Unfortunately the modern pronounciation of Arran has taken over for this spelling so it frequently gets mispronounced - I do make sure I correct everyone, even if it's someone we won't necessarily see again eg doctor's receptionist, just in the interests of spreading knowledge of the correct pronounciation. When he was born I spent a lot of time saying 'Aaron, like Aaron Copland' but unfortunately there was a famous footballer (who I'd never heard of) who pronounced it Arran.

Lots of evidence this is correct pronounciation :
How do we know Moses was bald?
Because he was sometimes seen with Aaron and sometimes not.

Anyway, I don't have a bee in my bonnet at all ..... But if you want Arran then call him Arran,

RedDwarves · 17/07/2018 21:57

Air-on sounds far too much like Erin.

It's always Arron in Australia.

Pemba · 18/07/2018 00:15

Air-on is the traditional British pronunciation (and I went to school with one, back in the 1970s). It was quite a rare name then.

The arrun pronunciation seems to have come about in recent years, and now seems to be dominant over here.

MikeUniformMike · 18/07/2018 08:42

Not keen on it but would say Arrun.

unicornchaser · 18/07/2018 12:38

Went to school with a couple of Aaron's and they were Ar-on/Arr-on.
Might be regional? I'm in Scotland and have come across a lot of Aaron's but never heard the Air-on pronunciation....

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/07/2018 12:46

Of ypu think about it though you introduce yourself and your child before anyone sees the spelling, don't you.
You dont show people a placard with your name on.
There fore what ever you spell it.
You'll introduce him as Arron
