Are these names too similar for sisters?

Hi, just wanted to get a general opinion. We are expecting a girl very shortly, a sister for Elizabeth. We quite like the name Alice, but do Alice and Elizabeth sound too similar for sisters?

Elizabeth's name is not shortened at the moment, but concerned when shortened (for example to Eliza, Libby, Lizzy) it would be too alike to Alice?

Not ideal but ok.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/07/2018 15:26

Well to say one has the potential for the NN Ellie and the other Allie. Yes I'd say they are too similar

Charm23 · 17/07/2018 15:27

No I think they're fine.

SoyDora · 17/07/2018 15:29

They sound fine to me.

userabcname · 17/07/2018 15:29

No I think they go nicely! I have never known Alice to be shortened.

Icklepup · 17/07/2018 15:32

They're fine

TeacupTattoo · 17/07/2018 15:35

Alice is hardly ever shortened, and Elizabeth isn't usually shortened to Ellie...I'd have them both they are beautiful and you can choose shortening a when they live at home with you and as adults they can choose but unlikely to be living together.
(PS I'm biased as Alice Elizabeth are actually my middle names!!)

AmazingPostVoices · 17/07/2018 15:35

I think they are fine.

Erisbo · 17/07/2018 16:31

I know an Alice and Elisabeth, shortened to Libby. I've never thought their names sounded too similar.

Erisbo · 17/07/2018 16:32

They're both lovely girls.

dw23 · 17/07/2018 17:07

As long as Eliza isn't a nn because that's way too close to Alice, I can't see a problem there. If I had an Elizabeth she would for sure be Betty or Lilibet, I think they are such cute nns.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/07/2018 17:25

Should be ok. Is there anything you like?

hoping2018 · 17/07/2018 18:38

They're fine.

I know sisters called Alexandra and Eleanor. Ali and Ellie! Entertaining but not silly!

UpDownUpDown · 17/07/2018 19:09

They are not similar. I think they go well together

Opheliasgoldenwine · 17/07/2018 19:17

I don't understand some people. They're individual girls; frankly if their names were Luna and Lila, I wouldn't bat an eyelid. I don't think similar names mean anything.

bridgetreilly · 18/07/2018 08:54

It's perfectly fine. Also, Elizabeth has plenty of other possibilities which sound nothing like Alice: Beth, Betsy, Betty etc.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/07/2018 08:55

Fine. Nothing like each other. Both classic names.

RedDwarves · 18/07/2018 09:17

I've never known an Alice to be called anything other than Alice.

And as an Elizabeth, I can assure you that unless she chooses to be known as Ellie, no one is going to call her that. The default is Liz/Lizzy.

EducationComesFirst · 18/07/2018 18:28

Thanks for your opinions everyone. She is most likely to be shortened to Eliza though (my favourite of the shortenings, sometimes I call her that).

Ellie is unlikely, so not concerned about Ellie and Ali.

I suppose my questions are:
Do Elizabeth and Alice go well together? and
Are Eliza and Alice too similar?

daisypond · 18/07/2018 19:33

I think Elizabeth and Alice are nice pair and go well together. Eliza and Alice are quite similar though, but I think they're OK. Have you considered all the short forms for Elizabeth? There are loads. Lisbeth? Elspeth? Lily? etc.

Mousefunky · 19/07/2018 09:55

Never met an Alice that shortens it. I think it’s fine.

ParisNext · 19/07/2018 09:59

No totally different. Syllable pattern is different even when shortened so you hear them differently. Lovely choices.

StrawberryCat · 21/07/2018 10:07

Elizabeth and Alice are lovely together. And Eliza and Alice aren't too similar imo.

heateallthebuns · 21/07/2018 10:10

I don't think they're too similar at all, they go very nicely together.
