I am expecting our second and I really like the name Percy. With my DS we didn't tell anyone the names we were thinking of (Arthur) and people seemed to accept it (though I was told later they were unsure when they first heard it).
I have been met with very odd facial expressions when I mention Percy. I thought it was cute! No one seems to like it and my DM says it's a nickname for a penis??!
What do you think?

Percy comes from this film I think
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_(film)
So I wouldn’t

buildabear · 14/07/2018 23:09

I mean the asc with penis, not the actual name ^^

OhTheRoses · 14/07/2018 23:14

Arthurian names (love Arthur)

Lancelot
Percival
Gawain
Gaius
Merlin

I think all of those are nicer than Percival.

I have an Edward and was thinking Oscar or Arthur when dd was born. Also like Louis and Theo. Frederick too (didn't go with our surname)

Dontrocktheboat · 14/07/2018 23:14

I would also have thought of the point Percy at the porcelain reference (but I have only heard this reading Bridget Jones' diary!) However I know of a recently born Percy and I actually think it won't raise that many eyebrows along with the Wilfs, Stanley's, Bertie's...

For the poster who said Stanley was not heard much - it is definitely name of the moment round here!

craftymum01 · 14/07/2018 23:17

Girl's name is Charlotte.

The trouble I have is that I work in a school. Every name seems to have an association for me.

Edward is on my list too. Trying to convince DH of that one. He likes Edward but not Eddie. Not sure how much you can control nicknames though

You can encourage ted as a nn for Edward quite easily

Charlotte a good pick!

I quite like Percy, makes me think of the lovely Percy the Park Keeper books.

I can't see how it's that different in sound to any of the Alfie/Charlie names that are so overused at the moment - and it's so much less common which is a real plus. I'd find it refreshing to have a child named Percy in my class.

Ericho · 14/07/2018 23:38

What about Toby (short for Tobias if you want a full name) if you decide not to go with Percy?

Ericho · 14/07/2018 23:39

I also think Hugo goes well with Arthur

craftymum01 · 14/07/2018 23:52

Not a fan of Hugo (makes me think of Vicar of Dibley) but Toby is a nice name.

I don’t mind it but (as above) I have heard people use the term Percy and the twins and would avoid for that reason alone.

SuitedandBooted · 15/07/2018 15:50

"I thought is was cute"

Do hormonal teens or middle-aged men want a "cute" name? Can you picture your husband/colleagues/friends as Percys?

Baby/todddlerhood is very short. You are choosing a name for an adult.

How about Edmund?

n0ne · 15/07/2018 16:22

Was on our boy list but I love old-fashioned names. Had a DD in the end.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2018 16:25

Percy Weasley was a dick.
I like the name, but I think the jokes would be too much.

Pearce is HIDEOUS.

TenThousandSpoons · 15/07/2018 16:38

I also thought Percy means penis.
Percy Weasley is a horrible character and having Arthur too will make people think of the Weasleys.
Percy Pigs are lovely though Wink so that’s a positive.
I think Stanley, Edward, Fred/George (if you do want a Weasley) all go well with Arthur.

JayeAshe · 15/07/2018 16:42

How about Perry ...?

itssquidstella · 15/07/2018 17:03

Percival is better

Cosmoa · 15/07/2018 17:35

It's not my taste but I'm surprised at the bad reaction! I wouldn't bat an eyelid if I met someone named Percy.

HJL2506 · 15/07/2018 17:50

I have a Stanley and his first middle name is Arthur. I think they go lovely together. 😬

daisypond · 15/07/2018 18:10

I can't say I'm a fan of Percy, but I think it's OK. Shelley the poet! And surely the Percy Jackson films have made the name current again. I quite like Arthurian names anyway. I do think "point Percy at the porcelain" but it still seems less obvious than Dick or Willy as names that now tend to be off limits.

MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2018 18:12

It makes me think of Percy Pigs and Percy Sugden. It might be cute but I don't think it is a manly name. It's frumpy.

Notquiteagandt · 15/07/2018 18:13

Percys on my top names list ..

chequeplease · 15/07/2018 18:20

I love the name Percy! But I'm very put off from this thread now.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/07/2018 18:21
  1. Percy = nickname for penis
  2. Perry Pig

So it's a no from me

BitOutOfPractice · 15/07/2018 18:22

In a way I am hoping we have a girl as that name is set in stone

Is it Fanny? Wink
