Violet vs Violeta

I really love the name Violeta (pronounced Vee-a-letta) - it is the Bulgarian/Spanish/Portuguese/Romanian version of Violet.

I think it sounds nicer than Violet - though I do like it as well - and I think it has more nickname possibilities e.g. Vea, Lettie

Would it be a weird name for a girl who will be 100% English?

I think Violet is nicer and also.....Violeta will get pronounced like Violet but with an Etta on the end.

So rather than the pretty "Vee oh letta" you'll end up with an awkward "Vi Oh Letta"

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2018 13:20

It will be pronounced Vile-etta here.

spiderlight · 11/07/2018 13:24

I like both. Just be careful with abbreviations - we were out the other day and encountered a family with a beautiful little girl called Violet, but when they called her they abbreviated it to 'Vile' :(

midsomermurderess · 11/07/2018 15:06

I much prefer Violeta, but if you're in Britain, it seems a bit frilly and well, operatic.

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2018 15:07

I've never seen Violeta, do you mean Violetta?

Either way, I personally prefer Violet.

Lotsofdigestives · 11/07/2018 15:10

Viola?

ladycarlotta · 11/07/2018 16:25

@bridgetreilly it can be spelt either way. Violeta with one T is a very standard European spelling.

I'm wondering, OP, if spelling it with two Ts, like the heroine of La Traviata, would give a pointer to its pronunciation for native English speakers? But I think pronunciation is not that much of an issue, people will learn it quickly.

I personally think it's very pretty.

booniloo · 11/07/2018 17:12

I think it would sound very awkward with an English accent.

bychoiceornot · 11/07/2018 17:14

Violet sounds prettier to my ear, but maybe as I'm a Brit and more used to it? I know a couple of little Violets who are known as Vivi or Lettie. And I agree that the European pronunciation does sound nice, but I think it would automatically be pronounced differently here.

TatianaLarina · 11/07/2018 18:53

Much prefer Violet. If I was going for ‘A’ ending it would be Viola, which I also really like.

Violeta just sounds a bit absurd in the U.K.

daisypond · 11/07/2018 19:00

I prefer the Italian Violetta to the Spanish Violeta - though it does remind me of La Traviata, the opera. It's possibly a more familiar form to British ears. I think it sounds much nicer than the rather ugly-sounding Violet (to my ears) though it does slightly head into frilly-dom. Viola is also really nice, best of the bunch.

RebelRogue · 11/07/2018 19:10

I'm used to Violeta and would pronounce it properly, but that's because I'm from a country where it is a common name.
Not sure everyone else will stick to the pronunciation you want though.

Hippopotas · 11/07/2018 19:54

Violeta reminds me of vienetta sorry Grin

Violet is nice and like Viola too as an alternative

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2018 21:19

The more I think about the more I think it's going to become 'Violeta, yes like Viennetta'. Which would put me off.

AnnDerry · 11/07/2018 23:22

In my family it would result in GPs warbling "Hear My Song, Violetta" and DDs talking about that god awful dubbed South American telenovela for tweens.

I wanted Viola for DD1 but in the local accent it sounds like Viler so I dropped it...

AjasLipstick · 11/07/2018 23:35

Bridge but that IS the pronunciation...."Vee-Oh-Letta"

People will however, say "Vi-Oh Letta" with the Vi rhyming with eye instead of with "she"

MadMaryBoddington · 12/07/2018 07:20

I think it’s too long and fussy. Violet is much nicer.

KiplingAngelCake · 12/07/2018 16:17

Violet is a beautiful name. I know a Violetta (Vee-o-letta) which is also pretty, but Violet is my fave.

MariaMadita · 12/07/2018 16:28

I really like Violetta :)

Viola is also lovely.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/07/2018 17:29

I prefer Violetta to Violet but prefer Viola to both

Lycanthropology · 12/07/2018 19:54

Not getting the Viola love... just makes me think of an instrument.

I love Violet (my granny was one). Think Violeta is a bit frilly.

daisypond · 12/07/2018 20:10

Viola and violet are both flowers. The name Viola (as in the character in Twelfth Night) is for this, not viola the instrument, which is pronounced completely differently.

TatianaLarina · 12/07/2018 20:35

Viola the name and viola the instrument are pronounced differently.

MariaMadita · 12/07/2018 20:55

just makes me think of an instrument.

They are pronounced differently (well, in English).

And it's a truly beautiful instrument I personally wouldn't mind being reminded of Wink
