Nina or Isla?

Can't decide and think they're too close for sisters (right?)

Nina is a family name, my DH's great aunt who is just lovely and really encouraged him in his pursuing his creative career when no one else did. She would be over the moon. DH would love to use it and I do like it.

But Isla has long been my absolute favourite name I love to say it, I love the way it looks, I love everything about it! But we have no Scottish connections at all. I'm not worried about popularity in that more than one at school, but as a Nicola born in the 1980s, I don't want a name that will necessarily date stamp my kid. (But isn't Isla a new classic?) DH does like it too (was on the list for DD1 as well) but probably prefers Nina for the family connection. He'll go with whatever one I pick.

We're also always talking about moving abroad (maybe a pipe dream though!), and I think Nina would be much easier in this respect. I'm not worried about the siren thing with Nina that's silly but I do worry it's a bit plain next to our DD1s name. Isla probably goes better with it.

Also our DD1s name has such deep meaning for us (was our midwife's name -- wasn't even on the list) that it's hard for me to just say "oh, I just liked the name."

But am I always going to wince when I hear the lovely Isla? Thoughts please!

I'm Scottish and much prefer Nina, Isla has been ruined by it's popularity imo.
We've just named our daughter Iona, which is another Scottish island and hasn't had the same fad phase (yet!).

Nina is lovely. Absolutely classic

BluthsFrozenBananas · 10/07/2018 07:27

They’re both nice, but I swear 50 percent of the girls under five in my area are named Isla.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/07/2018 08:27

Love Isla.

Thanks everyone! Have a while to go but will update when we decide :)

Nina is a timeless, international and classic name. It works across countries and decades. It has a lovely meaning. There are great literary heroines, soul singers and writers called Nina. Its a fantastic name.

Nina, 110%! Gorgeous name, uncommon but not daft. Isla is lovely but has been done to death.

Pemba · 11/07/2018 19:56

Nina is gorgeous and a bit quirky and not yet over popular.

Isla is OK but I find it a bit meh anyway, and it has been done to death in recent years. Besides in Spanish speaking countries they'll pronounce it 'iz-la', won't they? (and means 'island'). Whereas won't Nina be said the same way everywhere?

Icklepup · 11/07/2018 20:02

Nina!

Lucylookingforhelp · 09/08/2018 14:00

Nina!! Uncommon but known

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2018 14:33

They are both beautiful names, but if you really love Isla then I reckon you should use it. I have a feeling from what you say that you love it so much you'll regret it if you don't.

kettleonplease · 10/08/2018 12:18

I was called Nina and I hated it SO much I had my name changed by deed poll...
The siren thing might seem silly, but it's not when you're a kid and everyone is running around the playground laughing at you

TheCag · 10/08/2018 12:47

I love the name Nina, great choice.
