Caitlin - with no Irish heritage. Yes or no?

Current frontrunner for DH and I. Hadn't actually realised it was Irish til I was looking into the name last night. Neither or us have an Irish bone in our bodies (we have some Celt, but not Irish).

Do you think it's a name with an obvious heritage that it would be weird to use if you didn't share said heritage? Or has it become generic enough these days?

(NB I'm aware that true Irish pronunciation is v different from the anglicised version that we'd be using).

It's totally fine IMO. Lovely name and I've never thought of it as particularly Irish.

LoveInTokyo · 09/07/2018 12:35

Yes, totally fine.

PramCush · 09/07/2018 12:37

I'm Irish - it's totally fine. FYI, in Ireland it's pronounced Caught-ch-lin.

flumpybear · 09/07/2018 12:46

An Irish colleague many years back when it first became popular told me its more like Kathleen - I used to like Cate-lin and knowing it was more Kathleen put me off it

LighthouseSouth · 09/07/2018 12:50

totally fine. Love the name.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 09/07/2018 13:41

Lovely name!

If you're using the anglicised pronunciation I don't think it's weird at all - I'd find Cáitlín with no Irish heritage a lot more weird! Caitlin-pronounced-katelyn is definitely a name in its own right by now, it's been consistently super popular in several anglophone countries now for decades and I'm sure most people outside of Ireland don't even connect it to the Irish equivalent.

kitchenrollinrollinrollin · 09/07/2018 14:00

In Ireland it is seen as Scottish too I think.

TroubledLichen · 09/07/2018 14:03

Totally fine! Usually the anglicised pronunciation it may have Irish roots but I doubt many people would even make the connection. I know a few Caitlins/Caitlyns and they’re all American or Canadian and in their 30s with no Irish links.

SoftSheen · 09/07/2018 14:04

It's now a mainstream name, and quite a nice one, so I would go ahead.

Thank you for these reassuring responses!

Yes.

Ireland is right there beside Britain, cultures intertwined.

It's not like Japan. So, eg, I say yes to Caitlin but no to Akiko. Jmo. Some would say Akiko is fine.

Don't over think it.

You're probably more Irish than 3/4s of the Americans using Irish names. Don't worry about it.

Deadringer · 09/07/2018 20:11

You could spell it Katelyn to save confusion.

Jj2431 · 09/07/2018 21:33

Its fine

Mousefunky · 10/07/2018 15:18

I have no Latin heritage that I know of yet my youngest DD has a Latin name. I don’t think anyone actually gives a toss about name origins. Use it.

AlliKaneErikson · 11/07/2018 07:53

I know or have taught literally dozens of Caitlin/Caitlins, ranging in age from 42 down to newborn (in Wales). Only one has the Irish pronunciation.
