Baptismal name for dd

Not sure if this should be here or in religion but hey-ho.
We’re between Sophia, Brigid or Nina.
Sophia is my favourite personally while dh likes Nina best.
Having an inspiring story behind it for her is obviously the most important bit but we are also concerned about it being nice as a name as although it wont be used from day to day she has a very ‘out there’ given name so we want her baptismal name to be one she can use when she’s older if she doesn’t like her given name.
Other suggestions are also welcome Smile

E.g. is a baptismal name? I've never heard of this so curious. Is it similar to a confirmation name in catholism?

From your list I really like Brigid. There was one at my 6th form college and I always thought what a nice name it was

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/07/2018 16:26

Love Brigid.

I've never heard of a baptismal name either. Is it a mainstream Christian church? Usually you are baptised with your given name.
That aside, I absolutely love Nina, one of my favourite girls names.

Also interested to hear what a baptismal name is.

From your list I'd choose Brigid after St Bridget.

My DC chose their own confirmation names aged 11. It was interesting to see what they picked & nice to see that they all chose names that a) I liked, and b) went beautifully with their first & middle names.

Another vote for Brigid after St. Bridid, try the site Catholic Saint names for girls you can read about all the saints on there. another suggestion is the church where she's getting Christened if it's a masculine name it may have a female varient you could consider.

I prefer Bridget to Brigid - it sounds too like frigid

Chuckle2 · 07/07/2018 17:29

Brigid frigid

You don’t get a baptismal name and a different one for everyday, op? Have you misunderstood? The name she’s baptised with is her given name...

WeEatTheYearAway · 07/07/2018 20:27

In our church you are allowed to baptise your children with a different name from their birth certificate name if it’s not a saints name.
This is definitely the case as we have done the same with our older two.
I wasn’t brought up with any sort of religion so I didn’t realise it’s out if the norm

It’s an orthodox church

It’s been a while since mine were baptised, back then the baby had to have a name that was recognised/rules of the Catholic Church, so if OP baby has a quiet ‘out there’ name maybe they are going to use a baptism name rather than baby’s registered name.

RavenWings · 09/07/2018 00:13

Never heard of a baptismal name, but an interesting concept! I agree that it's good to pick one she could use when she's older.

Sophia - this is just very bland and overused imo.
Brigid - this is lovely
Nina - nice
