We have 9 names that we really like and I definitely don't particularly prefer one over the other. Wondering if people could just put these in order of preference to help us out a bit? Thanks

  • Adam
  • Aleksander
  • Bruno
  • Daniel
  • Gabriel
  • Jakub
  • Leon
  • Olaf
  • Oskar

Daniel the Adam. Not keen on the others.

DiegoMadonna · 07/07/2018 16:37

Don't worry OP, mumsnetters are notoriously incapable of coping with foreign spellings, but in real life it's not an issue.

Awrite · 07/07/2018 16:43

I like:

Aleksandr
Gabriel
Daniel
Jakub

Not overly keen on the others.

MariaMadita · 07/07/2018 16:43

I wouldn't worry about the spelling, tbh... My DH believes that "foreign" spelling variants are great with foreign surnames but may seem a bit weird with a very "British" surname. (Idk whether I agree but it's an understandable perspective imo...)

Adam 5

  • Aleksander 2
  • Bruno 3
  • Daniel 9
  • Gabriel 1
  • Jakub 6
  • Leon 8
  • Olaf 7
  • Oskar 4

Oskar (our first choice if we have a boy, but spelt Oscar)
Jakub (again, would spell Jacob, but love Polish nn Cuba)
Aleksander
Adam
Leon
Daniel

Gabriel
Bruno

While I wouldn't use some of them I don't dislike any.

Mwnci123 · 07/07/2018 21:01

seven201 · 07/07/2018 21:35

Jacob
Alexander
Leon

if you're planning on staying in the UK then do consider using the traditional English spelling, just to save your child a lifetime of of spelling out his name and/or correcting people.

Mwnci123 · 07/07/2018 22:39

I like the spellings as well by the way. I wouldn't change to the English spellings.

TatianaLarina · 07/07/2018 23:33

I don’t know why the British can’t cope with ’unconventional’ forrin spellings - makes me cringe.

Aleksander
Oskar
Jakub

TatianaLarina · 07/07/2018 23:34

Yeah maybe it is just MN. No-one bats an eyelid in London.

Perfectly1mperfect · 07/07/2018 23:41

I think Daniel, Aleksander and Oskar are all equally lovely. Then Jakub and Leon. Not keen on the others, sorry.

TatianaLarina · 07/07/2018 23:41

I forgot to mention Gabriel - one of my favourites.

Joeybee · 08/07/2018 00:49

1 Aleksander - Nice, classic, versatile name, but spelt this way, the child would constantly have to spell it out.
2 Bruno - Cute, simple, Different but familiar. Also like Milo and Hugo, which have a similar sound.
3 Daniel - Simple and classic with cute nicknames.
4 Oskar - Love this name, and spelt this way too is so lovely.
5 Leon - A bit plain and boring. But a simple name, and Leo as a nickname is lovely.
6 Olaf - Think of Frozen, which puts me off. But it is a lovely name.
7 Adam - Boring and plain
8 Gabriel - Weak and boring.
9 Jakub - Not a fan of this name, sounds really harsh, and a bit dated. Sounds more harsh with the 'k' spelling.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 08/07/2018 10:22

Weak and boring?! Shock Never mind The Angel, you needed to meet the Gabriel I knew. What a guy! And the antithesis of weak and boring.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 08/07/2018 10:38

About the spellings, OP, I think you should go with whatever you prefer, sounds good to you when you say it out loud, and goes with your last name. When I was at school in a city, I remember only a couple of children who had a parent not originally from the UK and names with these spellings. Yes, they were seen as different then, (different being a good thing to me, not always to others). Fast forward a few years to my own DCs, and even in our local rural schools, nobody, (except the die-hard few you get anywhere and have to ignore), would bat an eyelid or struggle with those spellings with a 'k'.
