Any HUGE objections to the name Åsne for a girl? I do have Scandinavian links

Pronounced Ors-na

I think it's lovely 😊

No one will know how to pronounce it and it will cause no end of trouble for any computer systems having the Å. I wouldn't use a name including Å, Æ or Ø in the UK

schooltripwoes · 05/07/2018 11:10

A tricky one. It's a lovely name but..(assuming you don't live in a Scandinavian country):
No-one will know how to spell / pronounce it
Kids can be mean and it looks / sounds a little bit like acne / arse
British computer systems often can't cope with special characters on names. Would this be a problem?

I like Åsa. I have no scandinavian links other than I have had scandinavian colleagues. One had a sister called Åsa
It's sort of pronounced Orsa.

Peachbubble · 05/07/2018 12:01

I like it. I had a guess at the pronunciation, as I know a Norwegian name with the same accent over the a, but I think if you are in the UK, the majority will struggle with how to say/write it.

sonnyboo · 05/07/2018 12:26

I like it! I also know an Åsa which people have no trouble pronouncing.

Xiaoxiong · 05/07/2018 12:37

If I came across that name I would probably guess that it was pronounced As-nee. Ors-na sounds lovely but that spelling wouldn't lead me to it as a native English speaker.

Asa I would still probably pronounce as Ah-sa or Ay-sa (which I know are both wrong).

Thank you for the kind comments.

Is it a complete no-no, then, to spell a name as it sounds? I’ve never been a big fan of Neave instead of Niamh, for example...although I think that our inoculation of Irish name spelling has been easier because of our proximity to our Irish cousins

I would pronounce it As-ne until I was told otherwise. Your DD probably will spend a lifetime correcting people as to how to spell or pronounce her name. I have a name that I continually have to spell to people (as does my DD) and it’s not that unusual - it doesn’t annoy me but does get a bit tiresome.
