Daniyal or Laidan?

Hello, our baby boy is half Moroccan/English.

The final 2 names we like are Daniyal and Laidan. Which do you prefer and why?

Thank you

His surname is both English and Moroccan as its double barrelled. We want a first name that works in both cultures. So I wouldn't pick Yassine for example as although it does work it definitely isn't seen as a known name, so that's why we are looking at names that are easy to say and also work in both.

I'd it's double barrelled ianot quite long? Something short and sweet then (DS has a right mouthful for his full name and it won't fit on forms!)

deptfordgirl · 02/07/2018 19:10

Laiden

deptfordgirl · 02/07/2018 19:10

Sorry Laidan

NapQueen · 02/07/2018 19:12

Zac. But if you anticipate spending most of his childhood years in the UK Id go for Daniel.

Itsear · 02/07/2018 19:14

Ismael

YearOfYouRemember · 02/07/2018 19:14

"Jhohnee?". What an idiot his parent is / are.

mozzybites · 02/07/2018 19:14

I'd go for zac, I would avoid Daniyal, he would spend his life spelling it out if he remained in the UK.

JedediahBila · 02/07/2018 20:08

I think with 'Laiden' there's a possibility of teasing as it has 'laid' in it, especially as his friends will probably call him Laid.

AndromedaPerseus · 02/07/2018 20:12

What about Zayn? Quite a cool name at the moment

Xiaoxiong · 02/07/2018 20:14

We had this with my cousin, looking for a name that worked in both Arabic and English. The list i think was Idris, Barack, Sami, Zander and Zaki and maybe a few more I will try to remember.

weekfour · 02/07/2018 20:18

I like Yasinne. I work with a Yaseen and no one struggles with it. He does get Yas or Yazzie.

Pebblespony · 02/07/2018 20:18

Choosing a child's name on the basis of how easy it is to get tat with their name on it. New one on me!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 02/07/2018 20:26

Irrelevant these days - my sister grew up never getting anything with her name. In the days of digital print she can have anything she wants.

Singlenotsingle · 02/07/2018 21:38

You may sneer, pebbles but these things are important to littlies.

ShowOfHands · 02/07/2018 21:43

Important to "littlies"? Neither of mine have names that are on pre-printed crap and they never gave two hoots.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2018 21:51

Daniyal is really nice & it travels well too in its various spellings. I also like Laidan, it's a bit more unusual.

OP, please ignore the posters on here who don't seem to realise it's an actual Arabic name & not just a 'yooneek' spelling.

mozzybites · 02/07/2018 22:18

I think pps realize the spelling isn't one the OP has made up but as it isn't the standard spelling the dc would have to correct the spelling a lot and others may well think it is a more made up spelling than it is.

nNina22 · 02/07/2018 22:36

Zayn is a great name, as is Arran

Picknickers · 02/07/2018 22:45

I love Daniyal. Loads of tat with Danny on it!

Alevel · 02/07/2018 22:48

What about Aden or Ali. I love Zac.

buttercup54321 · 02/07/2018 22:52

Daniel.
No silly spellings,

TheCraicDealer · 02/07/2018 23:38

If it's a DB'ed surname then I would be inclined to go short, sweet and easy to spell, for example, Zac, Ben(i), Daniel, Raif, etc. This is from experience- DH is DB'ed, part of which is v uncommon, and I see people's eyes widen and think "shit, what did he say" when he introduces himself. He has a bog standard first name which is a blessing as they usually catch that much.

With regards to your choices to me it's better to either go all out with a Moroccan-with-a-capital-M name or pick something like those above that have a Moroccan feel but are well known in the UK (assuming that's where he's being brought up). Daniyal is a bit of a halfway house and, as this thread goes to show, is unfairly assumed to be a yoonique spelling of a popular name to many. He could be Daniel on the BC, Daniyal as an affectionate nn by the Moroccan side and Danny by everyone else once he gets to nursery. Laidan will probably get mistaken for Jayden/Cayden etc. which may or may not grate after a while.

MikeUniformMike · 03/07/2018 11:16

Laiden is a no. Too much like Jadon, Aiden, Kayden, Bradon, Hayden. Sounds like Laden.
Daniyal is ok but opt for the western spelling.
There are some really nice muslim/arab names and Idris works in the UK and Morocco.
Ilyas, Yusuf and Sulamein are also nice.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2018 11:18

Why do people lump Aidan in with Jaydon and Kaydon?
