Too similar?

Already have an Emily. Expecting another girl and want to call her Eleanor, but a few people have said they think they sound too similar, given that they have the same first letter, but the same first sound.

Are they sufficiently different, or too similar to the point of being a bit twee?

They do sound quite similar, especially if there's a chance of Eleanor being shorted to Ellie. I'd probably go for something different.

TroubledLichen · 02/07/2018 17:22

Eleanor might become Ellie as she gets older and Emily and Ellie do sound quite similar. Worse would be if your Emily ever goes by Emmy so it would Emmy and Ellie. But I don’t think it’s ridiculous or anything, perhaps a bit twee though.

Yes too similar sorry.

What else do you like OP?

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2018 17:26

I think they are different enough actually, and neither of them are twee names.

EzeRiviera · 02/07/2018 17:31

Also like Imogen, but then we'd end up with Emmy and Immy, so that won't work!

The others on our list are Lydia, Lucy, Sophie, Annabel and Isobel.

Having grown up with a very unusual, out-there name (and absolutely hating it!), I want very normal names for my dc.

Annabel and Lucy are lovely. Sophie is nice too.

What about Alice, Florence, Harriet and Thea?

Flamingosnbears · 02/07/2018 18:12

Fine together in my opinion...

shirleyschmidt · 02/07/2018 18:38

I actually think Emmy and Immy is cute as they'd only be nicknames. The kids can always choose to be Emily and Imogen which sound totally separate to my ears! Emily and Eleanor do sound too close, I find myself wanting to say Emily Elephant (too much Peppa Pig in this House!!).
Of your 'backup names', which are all lovely, I'd choose Lydia. Underused but 'normal'. Love the nickname Lydi. Emmy and Lydi! 😍

Glumglowworm · 02/07/2018 19:10

I think they’re too similar, especially if they end up Emmy and Ellie

I love Imogen but I agree them Emmy and Immy are too similar too

All your names are lovely though

whiskeysourpuss · 02/07/2018 19:18

I have an Emily & a Lucy so they definitely go together.

MollyHuaCha · 02/07/2018 19:49

Too similar.

JedediahBila · 02/07/2018 20:06

I actually know two sisters called Emily and Eleanor, both late teens now.

I've never thought they were too similar, but I suppose it helps that the younger one has always been Eleanor, never Ellie.

Mummagump · 02/07/2018 22:20

Emily & Chloe

Emily & Maddie

Emily & Charlotte (nn Charlie)

Emily & Matilda (nn Tilly)

Emily & Lucinda

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/07/2018 09:50

Emily and Lucy, or Sophie.

Icklepup · 04/07/2018 14:08

I like Lydia or Sophie

Sessy19 · 06/07/2018 18:38

I have friends who are sisters, Joanne and Leanne. I’ve often thought, ‘did your parents not realise how similar your names are?’ But I don’t think they’re that similar now 😂😂
