Hi,

Our little boy is almost 2 weeks old. I think we've finally decided on Hayden Elliot, but we are just after some last minute opinions, etc.

Many thanks!

I like Hayden. It is derived from an old German surname and has provenance to it. Elliot annoys me though, just due to the multiple spelling options.

Brickswithstones · 30/06/2018 09:58

And I also can't really imagine a barrister or accountant called Hayden. An electrician, maybe.

It's not a name that could carry someone into any walk of life from cashier to Prime Minister.

@SailingDay What are these acceptable names that will ' carry someone into any walk of life....' ? Are these just traditional English names or will that include foreign names like Sajid Javid, Kemi Badenoch etc to name a few Tory MPs who appear to have done well without names like Charles or Elizabeth

Congratulations!! SmileFlowers

I love Elliott! Hayden isnt my taste, but if you love it then ignore the comments here and go for it!

Otherwise would you consider Aidan?

Peregrane · 30/06/2018 10:01

Names often come with connotations. You asked for opinions so it should be ok to point out that a lot of people will hear Hayden and think “chavvy”. You can then go and disprove those prejudices (should you want to).

How about reversing the names? Elliott Hayden? (Elliott is not my personal cup of tea either but you’d probably hate my favourite names!)

Lucky you are not in one of those countries where the municipal authorities will name your child if you haven’t picked a name within 15 days! :)

Petrolismygas · 30/06/2018 10:05

There is a school called Haydon near where I grew up, it was so rough.
Any trouble was always caused by Haydon lads.

Maybe it is the name!?

Do you know of any 'nice' Haydon/Haydens?

N0rfolkEnchants · 30/06/2018 14:06

I don't like either names but I wouldn't be rude about them

Bear in mind though that the OP asked for opinions so opinions she's got

Honestly if you love a name and you're set on it, what is the value in asking a load of randoms for their opinions?

Joeybee · 30/06/2018 14:27

Hayden sounds a bit Chavy to me.
Elliot is a fantastic end underused name, really lovely.

Sophronia · 30/06/2018 14:34

Not keen on either name, sorry.

ParkerPen · 30/06/2018 15:11

The OP asked for opinions so she's getting them.

In my books, Hayden = chavvy

florascotia2 · 30/06/2018 17:20

OP the name Hayden comes with just a wee bit of cultural baggage.
Have you read this, as one example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayden_(given_name)

If you are happy about that, then well and good.

I don't wish to be critical, but Ellliott (however spelled) is a surname. For many years, people have given surnames as first and second names, normally (at least in Scotland) to demonstrate family connections. Again, if you are happy with that, then I have no comment.

LoveInTokyo · 30/06/2018 22:02

I prefer Elliot Hayden.

TroubledLichen · 30/06/2018 22:08

Love Elliot. Personally I don’t like the name Hayden but it doesn’t have negative connotations for me; the only one I know is lovely and he’s a 40 year old handyman from New Zealand.

Rizzokicks · 30/06/2018 22:15

Agree with all the people who think Hayden sounds chavvy.
Elliott is much better but still not really my cup of tea since every Elliott I've ever known has given the name negative connotations (but that's only my experience obviously)

You've chosen the name and you now want opinions on it. Have you not learned anything from all the other name threads where other parents have been disappointed by reactions to their chosen name?

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 00:02

Hayden just sounds like a made up name imo

Dreamydew · 01/07/2018 00:07

I'm really surprised people see Hayden as 'chavvy' or like a 'made up name'
My Grandad was called Hayden, he was born in 1910, I thought it was a traditional Welsh name Hmm
I like it btw OP!

FurryTrousers · 01/07/2018 00:17

I once knew of a 'posh' Hayden, he pronounced it 'Hi-den'.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/07/2018 04:08

What about Elliot Hayden instead? I really like the names but sounds better to me this way around.

GinIsIn · 01/07/2018 04:16

It’s really not a name that’s to my taste. Sorry!

toobreathless · 02/07/2018 12:02

Hayden fine but prefer Aidan - bit stronger and more traditional IMO.

Elliot lovely.

GahWhatever · 02/07/2018 12:06

The Hayden's I know are all 10-12 years old and none of them are chavvy FFS! I don't know any little ones. It's nice OP and if you both love it just go for it and do not be swayed by MN!

MikeUniformMike · 02/07/2018 12:06

Hayden is dreadful sorry. Hayd for short. Just no.
Eliot is OK as a middle name but a bit of a baby name IMO.

TwinkleToes86 · 02/07/2018 12:35

Elliot is beautiful and I think it would be much better the other way round: Elliot Hayden.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2018 12:48

OP, Hayden Elliot is fine.

Hayden is a perfectly normal surname and while I'm in general not mad on surnames as first names there's nothing wrong with it.

Calling a name 'chavvy' is offensive, and referring to a name as a 'naughty boy name' is almost as bad.

DaisysStew · 02/07/2018 16:40

I think it’s a lovely name and if you like it then go for it.

And Hayden is neither chavvy nor made up, it’s a legitimate first and surname.

Some people on here really are insufferable snobs.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 02/07/2018 16:51

I think I'm going against the grain of most people here but I like Hayden (but dislike Elliott)!

I also like Aidan.

Congratulations!
