We are not Spanish but we like this name. Thoughts?Spanish names no if not Spanish? It has a nice meaning too.

I think its lovely!

Discotits · 23/06/2018 18:06

I do like it, although it sounds quite like Esperanto. Will it get shortened to Ezzy?

HelenaJustina · 23/06/2018 18:10

Know one but the family is Mexican, gets shortened to Espie. I prefer the long version!

hungryhippie · 23/06/2018 18:13

Im not keen. Sounds like a brand of perfume.

Aurea · 23/06/2018 18:19

A model of car? Blush. Sorry!

OlennasWimple · 23/06/2018 18:21

I love the character Esperanza Diaz, but I'd think it a bit odd to name your child a very Spanish name if you had connections

I would have suggested Demelza as a similar sounding name, but people will prob assume that you are a Poldark fan (which may be true, I guess!)

Jackfruitburger · 23/06/2018 18:22

I wouldn't and I'm half Chilean. I wanted to call my son Miguel but just the thought of it being yelled in a Bristolian accent across a playground put me off. I can't even think of what the shortened version of Esperanza would be.

Paranoixia · 23/06/2018 18:40

It would be fine if you were Spanish, but I would think it was very odd if your family was entirely British. And not odd in a good way.

It would be like a British kid called Jean-Pierre. It would be just be weird.

lljkk · 23/06/2018 18:41

I love it, Espie for short (one I knew).

Ihuntmonsters · 23/06/2018 18:44

I would assume a child with a name like Esperana would be Spanish/ Hispanic or have strong links. If I found out they were not I'd be Hmm about it. It would just seem very weird to me.

DeckSofa · 23/06/2018 19:13

I don't like it TBH.

Elkcuhc56 · 23/06/2018 19:18

I like it.
Who cares if you've got Spanish blood? As long as you like the name then that's all that matters!

Knittedfairies · 23/06/2018 19:27

I don’t like it, but you do and that’s what matters. I much prefer Hope.

booniloo · 24/06/2018 16:50

I agree with PPs, I would think it was weird if I met a child called Esperanza if they weren't Spanish.

letsallhaveanap · 24/06/2018 16:56

dont think its weird to have a European name...
Loads of English kids called things like Fleur, Blanche, Genevieve, Ingrid, Astrid, Lorelei, Estrella, Alma

then its pretty normal to have Greek and Latin names Alexandra, Stella, Luna

Really cannot see why Esperanza would be any different

danTDM · 24/06/2018 17:02

Odd, if you are not Spanish. People will pronounce it wrongly anyway. Do YOU know how to pronounce it properly? Do you speak Spanish?

Stick to 'Hope' surely?

Falaffels · 24/06/2018 17:24

A friend had a Portuguese Water Dog puppy, originally called Esperanza. (It's also a Portuguese name). Her deaf FIL overheard it as 'Esther Ranzen', and unfortunately that's the name that stuck!

Colbu24 · 24/06/2018 17:28

I'm Mexican and Esperanza it's a nice name. Not commonly used. Very nice meaning. Our son has a Welsh name and we aren't Welsh.
If you like it use it. Smile

YourVagesty · 24/06/2018 17:34

Falafells Grin

tomhazard · 24/06/2018 17:39

I like it! I like Esperanza Spalding though so I would!

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 24/06/2018 17:44

I think it would be odd - and that’s coming from someone who does speak Spanish and has lived (and hopes to return to) a place with a massive Hispanic community, where the name wouldn’t be out of place at all. I still wouldn’t do it.

If you like the meaning why not just go for Hope?!

marthastew · 24/06/2018 17:48

I like it. I also love Carenza.

MikeUniformMike · 24/06/2018 18:34

It sounds like Esperanto and Esther Rantzen.

LoveInTokyo · 24/06/2018 18:42

I do like it but agree it sounds a bit weird if you are not Spanish.

Do you like the way it sounds, or the meaning?

If it’s more about the way it sounds, what about Esmeralda, which has the option of shortening to Esme?

BestBeforeYesterday · 24/06/2018 18:45

Seeing as you're not Spanish, I think it just sounds pretentious
