I absolutely love the name Wilfred but family have laughed at us and said it's awful so I feel we can't name our son Wilfred anymore.

We like George but can't use that as a close friend has just chosen that name!

I love Grey but DH is unsure

DH wants him to be named William after himself but I think I want him to have his own name?

I can't find any names we both like!! Help?!

I prefer Will. I really don't like any of the others on your list.

MikeUniformMike · 23/06/2018 15:21

William but nn Wilf?
I prefer your husband's choices. Grey is drab but Graham nn Gra might be OK if a bit dated.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/06/2018 15:21

I don't like Wilfred on a personal level but I don't think in this day and age any name is tease worthy.
I quite like Wilbur, Winston and William as alternatives. Grey is awful sorry and much different to your other choices

Sophronia · 23/06/2018 18:39

I like Wilfred!

Namethatchange · 23/06/2018 18:43

Wilfred is a great name and children grow into their names anyway imo. My family don't like my sons name but I have never regretted calling him it.

CoatsProtectionLeague · 23/06/2018 18:44

I have a Wilf-Wil for short.

Paranoixia · 23/06/2018 18:45

I think naming a child after yourself is rather self important and tacky, so would avoid William in your situation. It would also just be so confusing, having to clarify which William you meant. If your husband is that obsessed with his own name, then use it as a middle name but not first name.

Grey is weird. It's not a real name, it's very hipster and alternative. What about Graham, with Grey as a nickname, so at least he would have a proper name? In America it would probably be fine, but definitely not in the U.K. - can you imagine a middle aged lawyer or accountant called Grey?

I think you need to widen your net and expand your list.

AdaColeman · 23/06/2018 18:50

I like Wilfred, and it's got cool nn Wilf or Fred.

Don't be put off by your family, though this is why it's best not to reveal names to family beforehand as you will never please everyone.

Baubletrouble43 · 23/06/2018 18:55

Nothing wrong with Wilfred. A good friend has one. Really suits him and everyone calls him wilf which I think is cool and non offensive. Don't let anyone else dictate how you name your child except your dp, that way madness lies.

DeckSofa · 23/06/2018 19:12

Wilfred is fine. Your relatives aren't keeping up with the times if they haven't spotted the "old man" name trend.

HJL2506 · 23/06/2018 19:15

I have a baby cousin called Wilf!

George is lovely. Have you thought of Grayson- shortened to Grey?

Otherwise Billy instead of William?

Elkcuhc56 · 23/06/2018 19:20

Wilf is so cute.
Go with your gut.
Your family will warm to it and then they won't be able to imagine him being called anything else!

Icklepup · 23/06/2018 22:57

I think you shouldn't listen to your family and go with Wilfred, wilf is cute.

Picknickers · 23/06/2018 23:16

Wilfred was on our boys list. I especially like Wilf.

MikeUniformMike · 24/06/2018 14:25

Grayson is dreadful. Please don't.

LoveInTokyo · 24/06/2018 18:48

Gray/Grey/Greyson etc are awful.

I quite like Wilfred. William is nice but think your son should have his own name and William as a middle name.

Does your husband like anything except William?

How about:

Frederick
Alfred
Stanley
Eric
Edward

Genuinely do like Wilfred though.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 24/06/2018 19:06

Wilfred is a wonderful name. Friends of mine have a Wilfred goes by Wilf and he is an awesome little guy. If you love it go for it. (Never discuss names with family until baby is here and you can just state this is ... people are less likely to comment when cuddling a little baby)
