Help! We have agreed that these names are good for both of us...I'd really appreciate some honest feedback and mumsnet is as honest as it gets! Which are useable and what are the pitfalls? I've already asked about Vera but it's a real contender so it's on the list...
Vera
Keziah
Phaedra
Thalia
Marla
Dinah

OK. You asked.
Vera - Duckworth. No
Keziah - OK
Phaedra - OK
Thalia - is it pronounced Tahl-ya? Thayl-ya? Thahl-ya?No.
Marla - Maples. No.
Dinah - Sheridan. Yes.
I'd probably choose Keziah or Dinah.

Namethecat · 21/06/2018 21:18

I'd say call your child what you damn well like. I don't know why people worry about the thoughts of others (strangers) when it comes to baby naming.

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 21:20

Why are you on here then?

letsallhaveanap · 21/06/2018 21:21

I LOVE Phaedra so so much! Its on our list too but im not sure we will use it as it doesnt really go with surname..
I also like Vera from your list.

nosleepnosense · 21/06/2018 21:22

Marla was my #1 for years. I love it. Never had a baby girl though.

Icklepup · 21/06/2018 21:23

I love Vera, don't like the others.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/06/2018 21:23

Honestly? They're all terrible, some worst than others.

Shesaysso · 21/06/2018 21:26

Truthfully really don’t like any of them. Dinah is the best if I had to pick though.

Polishitbehindthedoor · 21/06/2018 21:27

They're all hideous.... that was my first thought

I'm sorry. I hate to be so blunt but you did ask.

If I had a gun to my head Is choose Dinah... But that's only because it's the least hideous out of all of them.

AnyaMoondial · 21/06/2018 21:44

Marla is great. I like Keziah too.

endthefarts · 21/06/2018 21:54

I really like Dinah but don’t like any of the others.

I never know how to pronounce Keziah. Is it Kay-zia? Kez-eye-a? Something else?

lostfrequencies · 21/06/2018 21:56

I like Marla, I'm not so keen on the others.

NoCureForLove · 21/06/2018 21:58

Vera is fab.
Phaedra is nice but a braver choice - spelling? pronunciation?
The rest. Not in the same league.

user1498549192 · 21/06/2018 21:59

I think Thalia is lovely , and Dinah is OK. I'm not keen on the others personally, but: your baby, give her the name you love!

Paranoixia · 21/06/2018 22:06

Vera - I think it's beautiful. No one her age will have even heard of Vera Duckworth. To me, Vera calls to mind Vera Brittain, who got into Oxford in the 1910s, when hardly any women even went to university (and her own father didn't want her to), and then just a year in decided to train as a nurse so she could serve in WW1 army hospitals in France. She was a feminist and a humanist, and I can't think of a better role model for a little girl. Vera Brittain is of course also the writer of the spectacular A Testament of Youth. In addition to all that, I think it's a beautiful sounding name.

Keziah - I like this name, though I prefer it spelt Kezia

Phaedra - no, sorry

Thalia - like it (if it's pronounced Tally-a, I don't like Tar-lay) though I think Talia is a nicer spelling

Marla - not a huge fan

Dinah - Worst on the list, in my opinion it just sounds like an American diner to me. It doesn't sound like a name.

ABCFamily · 21/06/2018 22:11

I really like Thalia, and considered it when I was pregnant. Decided against it because I was concerned that there were too many ways it could be mispronounced, and thought that might get annoying after a while (personally I would pronounce it tah-lia).

I also have a soft spot for Vera, and Keziah would probably grow on me if I knew one in real life.

Not keen on the others

Polishitbehindthedoor · 21/06/2018 22:16

Paranoixia I think Dinah would be pronounced dee-nuh rather than dy-nuh ...?

I only say this because I know someone who's name is spelled Dina and pronounced dee-nuh

I could be wrong though. If it's pronounced dy-nuh then I dislike it just as much as the rest unfortunately. I would also think of an American diner.

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 22:18

Dina is Dee-na but Dinah is Di-nah (like Diana but without the first a)

ABCFamily · 21/06/2018 22:21

Dinah is pronounce die-nah, unless Disney's Alice in Wonderland has been lying to me! Grin

ooobisto · 21/06/2018 22:21

What on earth is Phaedra and how is it pronounced?!

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 22:23

Feedra

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 22:25

I think. Maybe Fayd-ra yuk.

TempleOfBlooms · 21/06/2018 22:25

I love Pheadra, I know two and they are both very cool.

Quite like Thalia.

The others sound very ugly to my ears.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/06/2018 22:33

I know a Phaedra and her names is pronounced Fedra.

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 22:38

Like Roger Fedra?
